Marvel Studios appears to have another major success on its hands as anticipation continues to build for the return of X-Men ’97. The animated revival became one of the most celebrated superhero series in recent years, earning praise for honoring the legacy of the original show while introducing fresh storytelling for a modern audience.

With the second season set to arrive on Disney+ soon, early reactions have already generated significant buzz among critics and longtime fans. Ahead of its Disney+ premiere, X-Men ’97 Season 2 has received an overwhelmingly positive response from critics, extending a remarkable streak for Marvel Studios. The new season debuted with a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes based on its first wave of reviews, continuing the acclaim that helped Season 1 become one of Marvel's highest-rated projects. The enthusiasm surrounding the show extends beyond Season 2. Speaking at the Tribeca Festival, Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum revealed that the studio is already looking well beyond the currently announced episodes.

“Now three seasons and we are starting the develop the fourth right now as well. It's just been incredible,” Winderbaum said. He further teased that the future of X-Men ’97 is only beginning, discussing the series alongside executive producers Julia Lewald, Eric Lewald, and Larry Houston.

The strong reception arrives alongside encouraging news for fans of the mutant franchise. Marvel Studios has already greenlit Season 3, while Season 4 is reportedly in early development, signaling long-term confidence in the series. Although additional reviews could still impact the current rating, the early response suggests that X-Men ’97 remains one of the studio's most consistent critical successes.

The enthusiasm surrounding the show's future also raises questions about the creative foundation behind its storytelling, especially following the departure of the creator who helped shape much of the series' direction.

Beau DeMayo’s influence continues despite his departure

Although Beau DeMayo was removed from the project shortly before X-Men ’97 premiered on Disney+ in March 2024, his creative fingerprints remain deeply embedded in the upcoming season. The former showrunner later revealed that he had completed a substantial amount of writing for Season 2 before his exit, helping establish many of the storylines audiences are about to see unfold.

"However, unlike Season 1, I will not be heavily involved or leading production, cast records, design, editorial, post, music, etc., nor doing any production rewrites as it relates to the creative vision of the show. This is why I've said I can't really speak to Season 2,"  DeMayo explained speaking about his reduced involvement as per IGN.

Despite stepping away from active production duties, he noted that he is eager to watch the finished episodes alongside fans. His comments underline how far development had progressed before his departure and why elements of his original vision are expected to remain visible throughout the season.

Despite his departure from the series, Beau DeMayo remained closely connected with fans during Season 1, providing insight into key character moments, including Morph’s emotional confession to Wolverine while disguised as Jean Grey. His emphasis on character-driven storytelling became a defining element of the show's success, and with strong early reviews and multiple future seasons already in development, X-Men ’97 looks set to remain a major force within Marvel Animation.
