The Fox X-Men saga is one of superhero cinema’s most expansive universes, covering mutant origins, decades of conflict, alternate futures, time travel, and multiple versions of the same characters. It is also one of the most confusing franchises, with continuity changes created by Days of Future Past, conflicting histories, and films that sit between timelines. The order below follows the story’s major chronological events, while clearly marking the point where the timeline splits.

Set during the Cuban Missile Crisis, X-Men: First Class follows the early friendship between Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr, who will eventually become Professor X and Magneto. The first X-Men movie takes place in the early 2000s and introduces the main conflict between Xavier’s students and Magneto’s Brotherhood. Colonel William Stryker leads the operation. He knows about mutants because of his son, Jason, whose abilities caused immense damage within the family. Stryker plans to use Xavier’s telepathy to locate and eliminate mutants across the world. The X-Men are forced to work with Magneto and Mystique after Stryker attacks the mansion. 

Wolverine discovers that Stryker was connected to the Weapon X experiments, giving him painful answers about his lost memories.The film develops the relationships between Xavier, Magneto, Jean, Scott, Storm, and Wolverine. It also establishes the Phoenix storyline through Jean’s final sacrifice. Her apparent death becomes one of the defining emotional moments in the original trilogy.

After Stryker’s attack, the mutant community faces its most divisive question yet: should mutant abilities be treated as gifts or illnesses?

X-Men: The Last Stand is set in the mid-2000s and revolves around a scientific treatment that can suppress the mutant gene. Some mutants welcome the possibility of living without their abilities, while others see the treatment as an attack on their identity.  The film also introduces the darker side of Jean Grey’s power.

After returning from the events of X2, Jean becomes connected to the Phoenix, an uncontrollable force that amplifies her emotions and abilities. The story brings major changes to the original team, including the deaths of important characters and the apparent loss of several mutant abilities. It ends with uncertainty surrounding Magneto’s powers and hints that the mutant gene cannot be erased completely.

Set after The Last Stand, The Wolverine follows Logan as he travels to Japan. He is haunted by Jean Grey’s death and has withdrawn from the world, living in isolation and struggling with memories of the people he has lost. Logan is invited to meet Yashida, a Japanese industrialist whose life he once saved during the Second World War.

Yashida offers Logan a way to lose his healing ability and experience ordinary mortality. Set in the reset timeline, X-Men: Apocalypse follows a new generation of mutants led by the younger Charles Xavier. The ancient mutant En Sabah Nur awakens after thousands of years and decides that modern civilization must be destroyed. He recruits four powerful mutants as his Horsemen, including Magneto, who is living under a new identity after attempting to build a quiet life.

The film introduces younger versions of Jean Grey, Scott Summers, Storm, and Nightcrawler. Mystique has become a symbol of mutant resistance, while Charles continues trying to build a school where young mutants can learn to control their abilities. X-Men: Dark Phoenix takes place in 1992 and follows the revised timeline’s version of Jean Grey. The power makes Jean vulnerable to manipulation and increasingly unable to control her emotions.

The film explores the cost of turning young mutants into public heroes. The X-Men are celebrated as astronauts and rescuers, yet the team is not prepared for the psychological consequences of Jean’s transformation.  The events of Dark Phoenix lead into a period of uncertainty for the team, with Jean’s fate reshaping the emotional foundation of the revised X-Men.

The timeline now moves toward a separate young-mutant story removed from Xavier’s established team.

The New Mutants follows a group of young mutants held inside a mysterious medical facility. Dani Moonstar, Rahne Sinclair, Sam Guthrie, Roberto da Costa, and Illyana Rasputin are told that they are being studied and treated for their dangerous abilities. As the group investigates the facility, each member is forced to confront a personal fear. 

The movie has limited links to the wider X-Men storyline. It features a reference to Essex Corporation and suggests a broader mutant world, but it does not directly continue the main team’s narrative. Its placement around 2020 is therefore approximate rather than firmly defined. The film works as an isolated chapter about trauma, fear, and young people learning to trust one another. 

The final stop in this timeline is the bleak future where Wolverine makes his last stand.

Set in 2029, Logan presents an aging Wolverine in a world where mutants have nearly disappeared. Logan cares for an elderly Charles Xavier while working as a driver and keeping his distance from the past. His life changes when he encounters Laura, a young mutant with abilities connected to his own. A group of corporate forces is hunting Laura and other children, so Logan agrees to help them reach safety.

The film is quieter, harsher, and more grounded than most entries in the franchise. Logan is physically weakened, emotionally exhausted, and uncertain about whether he can still protect anyone. His relationship with Charles gives the story an intimate emotional core, while Laura provides a glimpse of mutant survival.

Logan functions as the endpoint of Wolverine’s main journey. It does not resolve every continuity issue created by the earlier films, but it offers a meaningful conclusion to Hugh Jackman’s version of the character. With the Fox era now behind it, Marvel is preparing to usher the X-Men into the MCU, opening an exciting new chapter that could introduce the iconic mutants to an entirely new generation.
