With Avengers: Doomsday bringing fan-favorite X-Men characters back on screen, the mutant narrative is no longer a distant concept. Yet this connection to the X-Men was set in motion long before the announcement of Doomsday, with the MCU gradually introducing mutants through Earth-616 and the multiverse, steadily building anticipation across the Marvel fanbase.
From teenage heroes in Jersey City to fractured Wolverine variants, let’s take a look at every mutant already introduced in the MCU so far, and the emerging X-Men universe taking shape beneath it all.
Namor

After appearing in the MCU film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Namor was confirmed to be a mutant due to his unique genetic traits, including wings and hybrid physiology. Although he is not part of the X-Men team, he is one of the first explicitly acknowledged mutants in the main MCU timeline. Tenoch Huerta Mejía portrays the character as a powerful anti-hero in the film, who, due to his fear of surface-world expansion, initially threatens Wakanda before forming a fragile alliance with Shuri after their conflict.
Introduced as the king of Talokan, a hidden underwater civilization inspired by Mesoamerican culture, he rules a secret society that has evolved in isolation beneath the ocean. His powers include superhuman strength, speed, durability, regeneration, aquatic adaptation, and the ability to fly using winged ankles, making him one of the most powerful beings in the MCU, especially near water.
Ms. Marvel
Ms. Marvel first appeared in the MCU in the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel, where Kamala Khan is introduced as a teenage superhero from Jersey City who discovers her powers are tied to a mysterious genetic mutation rather than the cosmic bangle she initially believes is the source. The series’ finale and post-credit implications confirmed that she is a mutant in the MCU, with the X-gene activated differently from her comic origin, where she was originally an Inhuman.
This made her the first Earth-616 character explicitly labeled a mutant on-screen. While she has not yet received a full film-focused mutant arc, she has appeared in The Marvels, where her abilities have evolved further, expanding her role into cosmic-level team dynamics alongside Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau.
Wolverine
Wolverine made his official MCU debut in Deadpool & Wolverine, once again played by Hugh Jackman, marking his return to Marvel Studios continuity after the end of the Fox X-Men era with Logan (2017). After decades of anticipation, the MCU delivered the version of Wolverine with his iconic adamantium claws in a comic-accurate, iconic yellow and blue suit that audiences had long been waiting for on screen.

The MCU deliberately avoided undoing the emotional ending of Logan (2017), preserving its impact and narrative closure. So, they brought a Wolverine variant who, in the film, is emotionally fractured and detached after the loss of his X-Men, drifting through existence like a man in grief. His arc in the film centers on that emotional damage as he is pulled into a larger multiversal conflict alongside Deadpool.
Deadpool
Deadpool officially entered the MCU through Deadpool & Wolverine, with Ryan Reynolds reprising the role from the X-Men universe. Unlike Wolverine, his transition into the MCU was more direct. The film was produced under Marvel Studios and became the first R-rated MCU release, as the character retained his signature traits, including fourth-wall breaking, hyper-violent combat, and meta humor that referenced both Fox-era continuity and Marvel Studios history.

The film established that he originated from the Fox X-Men timeline, designated Earth-10005, and his story became intertwined with the TVA, which, with its intervention and multiversal travel, pulled him into the larger MCU framework, where he encountered an alternate Wolverine variant.
Professor X
One of the most significant Multiverse reveals is the appearance of Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, portrayed once again by Patrick Stewart. He appears as a member of the Illuminati on Earth-838 and arrives in his iconic yellow hover chair, a direct visual reference to X-Men: The Animated Series, with its familiar theme subtly accompanying his entrance.
He is a telepathic mutant and is portrayed as a founding-level member of the Illuminati, using his powers to attempt to stop Scarlet Witch during her assault on their universe. However, later, Wanda snaps his neck mid-telepathic confrontation. Patrick Stewart is also set to reprise the role again in Avengers: Doomsday, alongside other returning X-Men figures such as Magneto.
Beast
In the post-credits scene of The Marvels, Monica Rambeau becomes trapped in an alternate universe after closing an interdimensional rift during an incursion event. She awakens in a parallel reality inside a facility strongly associated with the X-Men, where she is greeted by Beast, portrayed once again by Kelsey Grammer. Beast appears in his fully CGI, blue-furred form and is depicted with a more comic-accurate personality, intelligent, calm, and scholarly in tone.
This version of Beast is not from Earth-616, but from an alternate universe within the multiverse. His appearance serves as one of the clearest confirmations that the X-Men exist elsewhere in the MCU multiverse continuity. Kelsey Grammer has also been included in Marvel Studios’ reported cast lineup for Avengers: Doomsday, further suggesting that this variant of Beast will return in upcoming multiverse events.
Magneto
Magneto has not yet physically appeared in a released MCU film or series, but he is confirmed to return as a part of Marvel Studios’ upcoming multiverse film, Avengers: Doomsday. The Marvel cast announcement indicated that Ian McKellen would reprise his iconic role as Magneto, which he originally portrayed in the X-Men films such as X-Men, X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
One of the Avengers: Doomsday teaser shows Magneto appearing alongside Professor X again in a damaged, alternate version of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, emphasizing a darker multiversal setting and a “world on the edge” tone. He narrates lines about death and destiny, reinforcing his long-standing ideological conflict and complex relationship with X.
Cyclops
Cyclops, portrayed by James Marsden, is reported to return as Scott Summers, marking his MCU debut in Avengers: Doomsday. Fans are excited to see the full fight sequence featuring his optic blast abilities alongside looming Sentinel threats, as shown in the teaser. He is also shown wearing a comic-accurate blue and yellow suit, reinforcing his classic X-Men design.
Cyclops is widely regarded as a central leader of the X-Men, and his reported return has generated strong anticipation, particularly around the possibility of him being positioned as a key strategic figure within the mutant lineup rather than a secondary character.
In the Fox X-Men timeline, James Marsden’s Cyclops was last seen in X-Men: Days of Future Past, where the timeline is reset following Wolverine’s intervention. This creates a revised continuity in which Cyclops, Jean Grey, and the X-Men are alive again at Xavier’s School. This version effectively overrides his earlier death in X-Men: The Last Stand.
Mystique
Mystique has been teased for an MCU appearance, with confirmation that she will feature in Avengers: Doomsday. Based on descriptions from early CinemaCon footage, Mystique is shown using her shapeshifting abilities during combat sequences, including impersonating Yelena Belova from Thunderbolts.
Her most notable Fox-era appearance was in X-Men: The Last Stand, where she sacrifices her mutation by taking the cure intended for mutants, resulting in the loss of her shapeshifting abilities. Following this event, Magneto abandons her, marking a major turning point in their relationship. Rebecca Romijn, who originally portrayed Mystique in the early Fox X-Men films, is confirmed to reprise the role rather than the younger iteration played by Jennifer Lawrence.
Nightcrawler
Nightcrawler, also known as Kurt Wagner, is confirmed to return in Avengers: Doomsday, with Alan Cumming set to reprise the role. He previously appeared only once in live action within X2: X-Men United, yet his portrayal became one of the most iconic and beloved X-Men interpretations. His White House infiltration sequence remains one of the most memorable mutant action scenes in the Fox X-Men franchise.
In X2, Nightcrawler is introduced as a deeply conflicted mutant initially manipulated and used as an assassin under the influence of William Stryker. Over the course of the film, he breaks free from this control and ultimately joins the X-Men, playing a key role in infiltrating Alkali Lake and rescuing imprisoned mutants.
Following the original trilogy, the continuity splits across different timelines. The original version of Nightcrawler does not return in later films, while a younger version, portrayed by Kodi Smit-McPhee, appears in X-Men: Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix.
Gambit
Gambit is one of the most iconic X-Men, known for charging objects with kinetic energy, most famously playing cards that explode on impact. In Deadpool & Wolverine, he made a surprise live-action appearance, played by Channing Tatum, a casting long anticipated after years of development attempts for a solo Gambit film that was ultimately cancelled following Disney’s acquisition of Fox in 2019.

In the film, Gambit appears as part of a resistance group in the Void, fighting against Cassandra Nova alongside other multiverse survivors such as Blade, Elektra, and X-23. The portrayal leans heavily into comic accuracy, featuring his signature purple-and-black trench coat, Cajun accent, and glowing kinetic card attacks. He is also included in Marvel Studios’ official cast announcements for Avengers: Doomsday, suggesting his return in the expanding MCU multiverse storyline.
Other X-Men characters, such as Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Yukio, X-23, Pyro, Sabretooth, Toad, Lady Deathstrike, and Azazel, also made their debut in the MCU via Deadpool & Wolverine.
