Noah Wyle credits George Clooney with setting the tone on the ER set, and that same spirit now runs through The Pitt. The actor, named People’s Sexiest Man Alive on October 27, 2026, still talks about his old castmate with obvious affection. Their friendship has lasted more than thirty years, from the early days of County General to a cheerful reunion on stage in January 2026. Some mentors leave advice behind, while others leave an entire office personality.

While most workplaces settle for a motivational poster, ER had a leading man who turned the whole set into a well-run clubhouse.

George Clooney set the tone on ER, and Noah Wyle says that tone was simple: take the work seriously, never the people doing it. The cast of self-described class clowns could not stay solemn for long, particularly with Clooney in the scene. Wyle has since carried the same ethos into The Pitt.

“Especially when you’ve got George Clooney in the scene, you know, um it was people that and he really set the tone," Wyle said while speaking on the Good Hang with Amy Poehler podcast.

He added that his approach was, “Let’s work really hard. Let’s play really hard. Let’s take this work seriously, but not take ourselves seriously.”

Wyle explained on Good Hang with Amy Poehler that Clooney also pushed everyone to show up on time, stay professional, and erase the divide between cast and crew. The goal was a set that felt like a company. Wyle later rebuilt that atmosphere for The Pitt, aiming for hard, relevant work in a respectful and inclusive environment, and he has a long game in mind, with roughly six seasons on the horizon. Pranks never made his own list, though he admitted a soft spot for harmless magic, like the layout fairy that built train tracks for his sleeping son.

While George Clooney built the clubhouse, Rob Reiner showed Noah Wyle how to greet every newcomer at the door, bear hug included.

Noah Wyle credits Rob Reiner for his set manners

Noah Wyle revealed on Good Hang with Amy Poehler that Rob Reiner gave him the best first-day welcome of his career. He arrived early on the set of A Few Good Men and spotted Reiner chatting with Aaron Sorkin, so he started to drift away politely. Reiner boomed his name, lifted him off the ground like a friendly bear, and told Sorkin the new actor was fantastic. Breakfast came next, and confidence arrived in about eight seconds.

Wyle said he would have followed any order Reiner gave that morning, because the welcome made him feel comfortable and capable. Twenty years after the Reiner welcome, Wyle thanked him for the gift of set manners after an audition that did not land. He has greeted every guest star the same way since, and he says the kindness brings out their best work. Aloof bosses leave actors doubting they belong, while warm ones leave them ready to work.
