Woody Allen is to return to filmmaking with his next feature, which will start production in Spain this October. The acclaimed American filmmaker, writer, actor and comedian has spent decades transforming relationships, neuroses and the absurdities of everyday life into some of cinema’s most distinctive stories. His best-known classics are probably Annie Hall, Manhattan, and Midnight in Paris

Now, after decades of making audiences laugh, think and squirm, Allen is returning to the director’s chair with a new feature set in Spain.

Woody Allen’s next film sets production in Spain this October

Woody Allen will start filming his next feature movie in Spain in October. Production on the project is set to begin soon, with Deadline reporting sources close to the production, which was previously reported to have a budget of around $14 million. The film will be in English and is likely to have a high-profile cast, but plot and casting details are under wraps. The project is being produced by Wanda Vision from Madrid, Gravier Production and 3SIX9.

As per Deadline, Spanish daily El País first reported the project last year, saying that Allen is returning to the director’s chair and it had secured €1.5 million ($1.7 million) in funding from Madrid’s regional government. The money would be released in stages based on certain milestones being reached. It will be Allen’s third movie shot in Spain following Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008) and Rifkin’s Festival (2020).

Allen’s filmography, which has spanned more than five decades, features a unique mix of romantic comedies, dramas, thrillers and absurdist stories. He is best known for films such as Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), Match Point (2005), Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), Midnight in Paris (2011), Blue Jasmine (2013), Café Society (2016) and A Rainy Day in New York (2019).

Woody Allen’s awards and honors

Throughout his career, Woody Allen has received numerous awards and honors, including four Academy Awards, 10 BAFTA Awards, 2 Golden Globe Awards, and a Grammy Award. Now, Allen's return to Spain adds another chapter to a filmmaking career that has always veered between comedy, drama, romance and darker explorations of human relationships. Production is now expected to start in October, and the high-profile cast is still coming together, so most of the upcoming feature remains under wraps. But its Spanish setting and a reported $14 million budget make it an interesting addition to the director's long filmography, especially as he continues his relationship with European cinema.
