Kevin Smith has revealed that his wife, Jennifer Schwalbach Smith, will not watch Deadpool anymore because of Ryan Reynolds. The filmmaker brought it up while chatting about the actor, and the reason turned out to be oddly specific. Deadpool is a franchise built around a lead who never stops talking, and that turns out to be the whole problem in the Smith household these days, apparently.
Deadpool breaks the fourth wall for laughs, but a very different kind of noise is what finally wore this viewer down.

The reason is Mint Mobile, and Kevin Smith says the commercials alone did the damage. His wife, Jennifer Schwalbach Smith, has grown so tired of hearing Ryan Reynolds pitch phone plans that the actor now spoils his own superhero movies for her.
“She hates those Mint Mobile commercials," Kevin Smith put it bluntly on the Jay & Silent Bob podcast.
He then added the knockout line, “She won’t watch Deadpool anymore because the Mint Mobile ads.”

Kevin Smith said on the Jay & Silent Bob podcast that her dislike has nothing to do with Reynolds’ acting or politics, and Blake Lively, his wife, is not involved. The trouble is that the actor’s voice follows her from YouTube videos to m----- podcasts she listens to. Her verdict came in language too salty for print. Smith thinks Reynolds seems like one of the nicest Canadians on the planet.
While Smith’s wife keeps dodging Reynolds, the ad count shows exactly why that is a clearly losing battle for her.
Ryan Reynolds’ history of starring in Mint Mobile ads
No official total exists, but Ryan Reynolds had made more than 40 Mint Mobile spots by early 2024. A mid-2024 ad titled 100th Commercial poked fun at that volume, and new spots kept coming through 2025 and 2026, including October’s Julia Stiles anniversary spot. Reynolds remains a creative consultant and spokesperson, though he no longer owns any of Mint. Mint shows no signs of distress under T-Mobile and keeps pushing promotions.

Reynolds got involved in 2019, when he bought an estimated 25% stake and his agency, Maximum Effort, took charge of the advertising. Four years later, T-Mobile agreed to buy Mint’s parent company for up to $1.35 billion. The deal closed on May 1, 2024, and Reynolds received an estimated $300 million to $337.5 million for his stake. Reynolds cashed out, and Deadpool night stays cancelled at the Smith home.
