'Wonder Man' Is Set to Break the MCU Mold, Even If It Upsets Some Fans

Wonder Man defies the formulaic tradition of superhero storytelling, sparking curiosity among long-time Marvel enthusiasts. However, showrunner Andrew Guest's statement about its status as a new kind of Marvel Cinematic Universe product might ruffle some fandom feathers.

Guest, who worked on Community, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Hawkeye, has recently discussed his approach to taking creative risks on the upcoming miniseries. This has led Wonder Man to become a completely exclusive Marvel television production. In other words, subjectively, expect the best of MCU or be surprised.

Andrew Guest revealed in an interview with TechRadar that Wonder Man will probably alienate some hardcore Marvel fans because it follows an unusual creative method. It takes a huge, creative, 360-degree detour to break away from typical superhero blockbusters by establishing character-based storytelling through its meta-plot framework.

"The series is a big swing creatively for Marvel. There's the chance that it alienates some hardcore fans... But I think you have to take risks. You have to experiment, and the hope is that people who are fans of the MCU can find something that they like about this show," Andrew Guest said in an interview with TechRadar.

Marvel needs to take creative risks, according to Guest, because experimental methods are crucial for artistic development, which helps attract both existing customers and new visitors who lack knowledge about the MCU interconnected system.

"Then there are people who are not fans of the MCU, who maybe feel alienated by all the convoluted storytelling that can feel like homework, can watch a show that really has an easy entry point, that's super grounded, and doesn't require you to understand a lot of backstories, or the different or complicated relationships between characters," the writer and executive producer added while speaking to the outlet about the non-traditional live-action production from the comic book giant.

The creative risk Andrew Guest took proved successful because critics now treat Wonder Man with high regard after it earned positive reviews and a strong 92% Rotten Tomatoes rating, which shows that its unique approach reached a wide audience.
