The Avengers are assembling for their biggest battle yet against one of the most formidable villains in the Marvel Universe, Doctor Doom. For a threat as massive as this, Marvel has decided to bring nearly every major superhero to the battlefield. Captain America, Thor, Bucky Barnes, Magneto, Mystique, Cyclops, and many others are expected to face Doctor Doom, but one major superhero who has yet to be seen is War Machine.
Colonel James Rupert “Rhodey” Rhodes, aka War Machine and Tony Stark’s best friend, could be a crucial piece in helping the Avengers defeat Doctor Doom. So, understandably, fans are curious about his potential return.
War Machine’s future in Avengers: Doomsday
Colonel James Rupert “Rhodey” Rhodes, aka War Machine, has not been mentioned among the characters involved in the film. Don Cheadle, who has most recently played the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was also not announced as part of the movie’s cast. This clearly indicates that War Machine might not make an appearance in the upcoming, much-anticipated film.
Moreover, War Machine’s last appearance in a Marvel series hinted at a particularly complicated time for the character. In the series Secret Invasion, it was revealed that War Machine was not actually himself, as Nick Fury discovered that a Skrull had taken his place and was pretending to be him. The Skrulls possess shapeshifting abilities that allow them to assume the appearance of other people.

This raised several questions about how long the character had been impersonated and led fans to question his previous appearances in the MCU. It was certainly an intriguing and unexpected reveal that left many fans scratching their heads. The reveal was reportedly part of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige’s plan to surprise fans.
“We needed to have a character that one would not expect to be a Skrull,” he told Marvel.
Interestingly, Secret Invasion also reportedly opened the door for another potential show that has faced lengthy delays.
What happened to Armor Wars
During Disney’s 2020 Investor Day, Marvel Studios announced that it was developing Armor Wars. The project was supposed to focus on Colonel James Rupert “Rhodey” Rhodes, aka War Machine. The project was expected to explore what could happen if Tony Stark’s advanced technology fell into the wrong hands. Don Cheadle was set to reprise his role as Rhodey, and he had even explained that Secret Invasion potentially helped set up the story for the upcoming project.

Armor Wars was initially planned as a six-episode Disney+ series but was later reworked into a theatrical film. However, the movie has yet to be released and has continued to face delays and uncertainty. With Armor Wars still up in the air, many fans are also curious about whether War Machine will return in Avengers: Doomsday.
