There is much hype surrounding the live-action adaptation of Moana, starring Dwayne Johnson and Catherine Laga'aia. However, what many fans have also been eagerly waiting for is the next chapter in Moana's journey. The animated movie Moana sees her chosen by the ocean for a dangerous adventure to save her people, while in the sequel, Moana 2, she faces dangerous gods and goddesses on an even bigger adventure.

And what lies ahead for Moana can be found out in a third animated film, which did not have any updates until recently. Dwayne Johnson has just shared an exciting update on the development of a third Moana movie.

Dwayne Johnson confirmed that a third animated Moana movie is currently in development at Disney. He revealed the news during his appearance at a press conference in Rio de Janeiro for the live-action movie. His comments were shared via a since-deleted video from Almanaque Disney on X.

“Yes, we have talked about Moana 3, yes. But first, live-action Moana, we'll let that come out first. We have [the] amazing Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, who have been our writers... they will pen Moana 3,” he said.

Moana, which came out in 2016, was a major success, pulling in $687 million worldwide, and later became one of Disney+'s most-streamed movies. Moana 2 was originally planned as a Disney+ series, but was turned into a theatrical release. And safe to say, the decision worked out well for the studio as the movie grossed more than $1 billion worldwide.

So, a third movie is not surprising. For now, Disney has not revealed any details about the plot, release date, or full cast. However, Dwayne Johnson and Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Maui and Moana in the animated films, are expected to reprise their roles for the third movie. Now, both can also be heard in the live-action remake.

While Cravalho's voice appears seemingly for a brief and memorable moment in a song, it quickly stole the spotlight.

Why Moana's 'Along the Way' is so nostalgic

The live-action adaptation of Moana brings back Dwayne Johnson as the demigod Maui, while Catherine Laga'aia takes on the role of Moana. But one special moment reunites Johnson with the original voice of Moana, Auli'i Cravalho, through the song 'Along the Way.' The track, which is like a musical dialogue, blends the voices of all three performers, including the live-action Moana, Laga'aia.

Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, 'Along the Way' brilliantly connects the animated Moana with her live-action counterpart by alternating their vocals throughout the song. It becomes a beautiful homage to the original film while introducing a fresh interpretation of the beloved character. There could be more surprises in store when Moana arrives in theaters this year.
