Chris Columbus contends that the unique circumstances and charm of the 1990 film are impossible to recapture. The original 1990 movie was a massive commercial success, earning $476 million worldwide and becoming the second-highest-grossing film of that year. Columbus also directed the 1992 sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, which, while grossing less, was still the third-highest-grossing film of its release year with $359 million worldwide.

The very essence of the original's success makes any modern recreation a high-stakes gamble. An attempt to reboot the classic has already been made, offering a clear answer to whether a remake can recapture the magic.

Disney attempted to remake the film in 2021 with Home Sweet Home Alone, a Disney+ exclusive. The movie followed a similar plot, starring a young boy left behind during a family vacation who must fend off two burglars. However, the film received scathing reviews from critics, ultimately reinforcing the idea that the original's charm and authenticity are irreplaceable. The stark contrast in critical reception between the original and the remake serves as a cautionary tale.

Home Sweet Home Alone received a 15% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 3.6/10 user rating on IMDb, largely because it failed to capture the original's essence.
