The shoot began on August 24, 2026, in New South Wales, Australia, with David Gordon Green directing and David Weil and David J. Rosen penning the screenplay. Backed by a reported $70 million budget, the film is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax through the Screen NSW “Made in NSW” fund, with Supermax set to premiere exclusively on Prime Video, although its exact release date remains under wraps.

But while Smith’s first day came with a little laughter and a stylish surprise, his character is walking straight into a nightmare behind supposedly unbreakable walls.

The upcoming action thriller follows two FBI agents who are sent into the world’s most secure maximum-security prison after a seemingly impossible m***** occurs inside its impenetrable walls. Smith plays veteran investigator Rex, who teams up with a younger FBI partner portrayed by AnnaSophia Robb as they attempt to uncover how the k****** happened and who could possibly be responsible. With the facility designed to be virtually impossible to breach, every inmate, guard, and member of the prison staff could hold a piece of the puzzle.

The film also keeps one of its biggest mysteries locked away, with Jaafar Jackson taking on a pivotal but undisclosed role reportedly tied to the central m***** mystery. Jason Clarke, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Andrés Almeida, Martin Bats Bradford, and Erika Ringor round out the ensemble, adding even more layers to the locked-room thriller. With Smith leading an investigation where there is nowhere to escape and seemingly nowhere to hide, Supermax could turn one impossible m***** into a full-blown fight for survival.
