Jimmy Kimmel is moving his planned interview with Texas Senate candidate James Talarico from ABC to YouTube, keeping the conversation off broadcast television amid continued FCC pressure on the network. The move adds another unusual chapter to Kimmel’s increasingly complicated relationship with the US President's administration, which has repeatedly made the late-night host a target. After years of presidents becoming material for monologues, Kimmel’s latest clash shows how political comedy can now collide directly with the machinery overseeing the airwaves.

There was a time when the biggest consequence of a late-night host roasting a president was an angry tweet from the Oval Office. Kimmel’s latest move suggests the stakes have become considerably more complicated.

Why Jimmy Kimmel is moving the interview online

Jimmy Kimmel announced on Wednesday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! that his interview with James Talarico would not appear on ABC’s broadcast. Instead, the conversation will be posted on YouTube, with Kimmel saying the decision was made partly out of concern for local ABC affiliates that could face regulatory pressure.

“Out of consideration for our local stations, especially our ABC affiliates in Texas who would have to deal with this nonsense, my interview tomorrow with James Talarico will not air on television,” Kimmel said.

The distinction matters because Talarico is not simply another political guest stopping by late night. He is running for Senate as the Democratic candidate in Texas, making the interview inherently political at a moment when ABC has been dealing with heightened scrutiny from the FCC. Kimmel specifically pointed in the Wednesday episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! to the agency’s repeated threats involving ABC station licenses as the reason for keeping the interview away from broadcast television.

The decision also lands against the backdrop of Kimmel’s long-running feud with the US president, Donald Trump.

Jimmy Kimmel is still on the air, despite everything

The timing is particularly striking because Jimmy Kimmel Live! recently found itself at the center of another fight over political comedy. There has been a continued confrontation between ABC and the FCC following the controversy that erupted after Jimmy Kimmel’s comments about the k****** of Charlie Kirk. It also led to his temporary suspension in September 2025 amid backlash from station owners and FCC Chairman Brendan Carr.

That episode turned what might once have been a familiar late-night controversy into something much larger. Kimmel returned to the air and recently celebrated the 4,000th episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, joking that regulators had tried to ensure the show would not make it that far. Meanwhile, the FCC’s relationship with ABC remains contentious, with Disney challenging government pressure over broadcast licensing and free-speech concerns.

Kimmel is not losing the interview. He is simply moving it to a platform where the conversation can happen without putting ABC’s local affiliates in the line of fire. In an era when a late-night political joke can trigger regulatory scrutiny, that distinction may be increasingly important.
