The highly anticipated release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day is knocking on the door, but an eerie fashion trend has fans terrified. Moviegoers fear that Zendaya's thematic red-carpet choices are secretly signalling a heartbreaking fate for her character, Michelle ‘MJ’ Jones-Watson. Could her dark press tour wardrobe mean that MJ is facing her final cinematic chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Observant fans quickly linked her mourning-inspired press wardrobe to previous celebrity red carpet hints.

Zendaya's black wardrobe choices add fuel to fan theories about MJ's tragic fate

Zendaya wore striking all-black ensembles across the press tour, culminating in a dramatic black Ashi Studio gown at the Los Angeles premiere. Her deliberate sartorial choices seem to heavily mirror Millie Bobby Brown, who famously wore black during the Stranger Things 5 tour to symbolically mourn her character Eleven, as she said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The fashion choices extended globally, including a black fringed Christian Cowan dress in Madrid and a white gown in Shanghai.

In Chinese culture, white traditionally symbolizes mourning and funeral rites. During a promotional appearance in Spain, Zendaya cryptically advised attending fans to bring tissues to theatres, fuelling further anxiety.

“I would say watch all of our previous Spider-Man movies just to keep you caught up, and then bring some tissues. We go there,” she said. While Marvel has not confirmed any character deaths, fans remain convinced these method-dressing clues point to tragic narrative stakes. Viewers draw direct parallels to Millie Bobby Brown’s  Stranger Things 5 tours.

Beyond the dark theories, the red-carpet tour showcased extraordinarily high-fashion craftsmanship and archival pieces.

Law Roach's visionary styling choices

Zendaya stunned onlookers at the Spider-Man: Brand New Day Los Angeles premiere in a black satin Ashi Studio corset with a sweeping architectural train. Earlier, she donned another dress from the Saudi Arabian label with a striking figure-hugging silhouette featuring delicate antenna-like pleats that transformed the young actress into a living work of art. These looks orchestrated by Law Roach effectively turned the major blockbuster premiere into her personal fashion runway.

"It is kind of an abstract way to present the spider," Law Roach told Variety. Speaking on the red carpet on Monday, her longtime stylist, Law Roach, explained the creative vision behind the dramatic Los Angeles premiere attire.

"In our mind, it is like this metamorphosis of this woman into this thing," he added. Roach admitted he could not select a single favourite outfit from the tour; he also praised her London look.

She rocked an archival spiderweb dress from John Galliano's 1997 Circus collection, complete with intricate chains twisting into a spider web across her back. Although Marvel has not officially confirmed MJ's fate,  Tom Holland nearly spilled an emotional spoiler during a recent interview before Zendaya quickly cut him off. Combined with her black press tour wardrobe, the moment has only intensified fan theories about MJ's survival.
