Will Maester Aemon Be In 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms'?

The Game of Thrones prequel series, HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, adapts George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas and is likely to feature a familiar face from the long-running epic blockbuster. It tells the tales of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and his companion Egg, a young Targaryen prince, Aegon.

The plot takes place around a hundred years before Game of Thrones and centers on a modest pair moving through Westeros when dragons have nearly disappeared from memory. But the Targaryens are still in power.

One of the frequently asked questions is whether Maester Aemon, one of the most famous characters of Game of Thrones, will be part of this new prequel.

Maester Aemon’s place in the timeline: Will he appear in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?

There is no confirmation on Maester Aemon’s appearance in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. In the series Game of Thrones, Maester Aemon Targaryen is an aged Night Watchman and a mentor at Castle Black, who is respected for his insight and is well aware of his bloodline as a Targaryen. This makes him the great-uncle of Daenerys Targaryen, and unbeknownst to him, the great-great-uncle of Jon Snow.

However, in the timeline of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Aemon could be a very young boy, probably already in training at the Citadel to become a Maester. The source novellas mention him as Egg’s elder brother and the one who later bestows the nickname Egg on him, but he does not make a direct appearance in The Hedge Knight.

The adaptation insights and interviews with the showrunner, Ira Parker, suggest that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will most likely include some recognized names and faces while building up the world of Westeros, maybe even beyond the original novellas. But Aemon's presence has not yet been officially confirmed for the 1st Season.

"I think you're gonna hear some names. I'm sure you're gonna see faces. Yes, there are plans for faces as we move forward, hopefully, as we move forward," stated Ira Parker in a vague comment to Screenrant about familiar faces like Aemon’s potential appearance in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, streaming since January 18, 2026.

In Game of Thrones, Maester Aemon, the maester at Castle Black and one of Lord Commander Jeor Mormont's closest advisers in the Night's Watch, was played by the late actor Peter Vaughan.
