Will Jeffrey Dean Morgan Return in 'The Boys' Season 5?

With Season 4, The Boys has pushed its chaotic world to even darker extremes, tightening its grip on a Billy Butcher’s universe. Pulling in over 55 million global viewers within just 39 days, the series is no longer just holding ground; it is escalating into something far more intense and unrelenting. However, as Season 5 delivered two episodes of its biggest and final chapter on April 8th and 14th, 2026, the question around Joe Kessler, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, begins to stir serious curiosity, especially with his presence being deeply tied to Butcher’s darkest path.
So, will the CIA case officer Joe Kessler return to stand beside his old ally Billy Butcher's mind once again, or is his story about to take a far darker turn than anyone expects?

While there is still no official confirmation around Joe Kessler’s return, the silence itself feels louder than ever, with fans strongly expecting him to reappear, driven by the way the story left his presence lingering. With Kessler sitting in the backseat as Billy Butcher drove away, the so-called devil on his shoulder was not gone; it was very much in control, leaving his arc far from finished in season 4.
And adding fuel to the speculation, Jeffrey Dean Morgan himself, earlier in 2024, has admitted he cannot imagine Season 5 unfolding without at least some form of Kessler’s presence, even without any official talks, making his return feel less like a possibility and more like an inevitable collision waiting to happen.
"I don’t know how you do Season 5 without an appearance, at least. That’s my feeling. I’ve never had any official talks about it, but I think it’d be really hard to carry on without some sort of resolution, and hopefully that’ll be a whole season!" Morgan told Variety.
Kessler made his debut in Season 4 as a ruthless CIA agent from Billy Butcher’s past, willing to cross any line to take down Homelander and other supes. A shocking twist later revealed he was only a hallucination, a dark reflection of Butcher’s mind, as the real Kessler had died years ago. However, taking the chaos and unpredictable turns to an even darker level, The Boys Season 5 has already begun streaming on Amazon Prime Video, with Episode 3 set to roll out tomorrow, April 15, 2026.
As Morgan’s return still hangs in uncertainty, the storm is far from over, with Season 5 debuting with a perfect 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and familiar faces set to take charge in the episodes ahead.
Who is returning in The Boys Season 5?
The final chapter brings back the core chaos-makers, led by Karl Urban as Billy Butcher and Antony Starr as Homelander, alongside Jack Quaid, Erin Moriarty, Laz Alonso, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Jessie T. Usher, Chace Crawford, and Nathan Mitchell returning to push the story deeper into chaos. Backed by key players from Vought, including Colby Minifie, Cameron Crovetti, Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Giancarlo Esposito, the stakes feel more explosive than ever.

Adding another layer to the madness, Jensen Ackles returns as Soldier Boy, joined by Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins, and Jim Beaver, marking a major Supernatural reunion, while the universe expands further with a crossover from Gen V, bringing in Jaz Sinclair, Lizze Broadway, Maddie Phillips, Asa Germann, and London Thor, turning Season 5 into a full-blown collision of worlds.
However, Joe Kessler’s return feels deeply tied to the core of the storyline, but until any official confirmation arrives, nothing can be said with certainty, especially in a world like The Boys, where twists can reshape the narrative at any moment.
