Saturday Night Live has launched countless comedy legends, but not every chapter of its history has been a success story. Reflecting on Molly Shannon’s rise during one of the show’s most turbulent periods, Will Ferrell recently revealed that the comedian played a pivotal role in helping SNL regain its footing amid mounting criticism and growing doubts about its future. Decades later, with both stars now considered comedy royalty, Ferrell is looking back at the moment he believes changed the trajectory of the iconic sketch series forever.

And if Ferrell’s memories are any indication, the future of Saturday Night Live may have looked very different had one awkward Catholic schoolgirl never stepped onto the stage.

Recently speaking at Molly Shannon’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, Will Ferrell looked back on the fourth episode of Season 21 in October 1995, the night he believes changed Saturday Night Live’s fortunes. At a time when the show was battling criticism and “Saturday Night Dead” headlines, Shannon’s debut as Mary Katherine Gallagher triggered a wave of laughter unlike anything the cast had experienced that season. Hearing the audience roar from backstage, Ferrell recalled realizing that SNL had finally found its breakthrough, later admitting he thought, “We’re going to be okay. Molly has saved us.”

"To the point that I thought, Oh my god, I haven't heard laughter like this so far in the three shows we've done. And it was such an emotional moment, because I remember thinking, We're going to be okay. Molly has saved us — at least we have one funny character." Ferrell said at the Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony.

And that spark quickly became a phenomenon. Mary Katherine Gallagher emerged as the defining character of Shannon’s seven-season SNL run, an awkward Catholic schoolgirl plagued by stage fright and emotional swings yet utterly convinced she was destined for stardom. Audiences could not get enough, and the character’s popularity eventually grew so massive that the 1999 comedy Superstar was built entirely around her, with Shannon and Ferrell leading the film.

That would not be the only time a script would bring Shannon and Ferrell together, as the duo is set to reunite in Netflix’s highly anticipated sports comedy The Hawk.

Ferrell leads the series as the aging golf legend, while Shannon plays his ex-wife, who remains unconvinced that his comeback dream has any chance of success. The cast also includes Jimmy Tatro as Lonnie’s rising-star son and biggest rival, alongside Luke Wilson, Fortune Feimster, Chris Parnell, Katelyn Tarver, and David Hornsby. Created by Ferrell, Harper Steele, and Chris Henchy, The Hawk arrives with a powerhouse creative team and is already shaping up to be one of Netflix’s most anticipated comedy releases of the summer.

And nearly three decades after helping shape one of Saturday Night Live’s most memorable eras, Molly Shannon and Will Ferrell continue to prove why they remain one of comedy’s most beloved duos.
