Will Ferrell has spent decades as one of comedy’s most recognizable stars, from Saturday Night Live to hit films like Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Elf, and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. He’s built a career on loud, memorable characters and a gift for making absurdity feel effortless.

But now, in a surprisingly softer turn, Ferrell is hinting that his son Magnus may be the thing that finally nudges him toward retirement.

Will Ferrell says Magnus’ music career means more than anything

Fame has a way of encouraging grand retirement plans, though few are as cheerfully humble as volunteering to carry someone else's guitar. For Will Ferrell, the dream is not another starring role, it is trading the spotlight for the edge of the stage, following his son wherever the music leads.

“It’s the best. I’m more excited about that than anything else,” he told the outlet, adding that his son works hard and treats the craft with real commitment.

“I really want to just retire and be his roadie. 2 or 3 more seasons of 'The Hawk' and I'll just be his roadie.” Ferrell told Entertainment Weekly.

Ferrell joked about his retirement plans to Entertainment Tonight. The line lands as a punchline, but it also reflects how fully he seems to embrace Magnus’ path. Magnus has already been building a music career of his own, with reports noting that he has been releasing songs and working to establish himself outside his father’s shadow.

Ferrell took the joke even further with a stagehand fantasy that made the point even clearer.

“I'll just be like the electrician at the Sabrina Carpenter concert I'll just do bits while he's on stage.” The quote shows that he is not just supportive in theory; he is openly imagining a future where he gets to cheer from the sidelines while his son takes the spotlight.

Still, even as Ferrell leans into proud dad mode, his recent on-screen appearances have sparked a very different reaction.

MLB fans react to Will Ferrell’s surprise Home Run Derby cameo

Netflix’s Home Run Derby broadcast got off to an uneven start when Will Ferrell, Luke Wilson, and Jimmy Tatro popped up during player introductions in a way many viewers felt was unnecessary. The reaction was less about Ferrell himself and more about the timing and presentation, especially as the event was already adjusting to new rules and a new platform.

That said, the celebrity cameo was clearly part of a bigger promotional push for Ferrell’s upcoming Netflix project, The Hawk. Ferrell is using the character of Lonnie Hawkins, his mock golf legend, as part of a broader rollout that includes a SKIMS Men campaign. In that ad, Hawkins is treated like a washed-up sports icon still chasing one more comeback, with the brand leaning into the joke through its “one more round” style messaging.

So while some baseball fans found the Derby intro segment a little forced, the bigger picture is simple. Netflix and its partners are building awareness around The Hawk wherever they can. That includes comedy bits, sports broadcast cameos, and a highly visible fashion campaign. It may not have landed perfectly in the moment, but it does show how aggressively the character is being positioned ahead of the show’s debut.
