Jesse Eisenberg has turned down Aaron Sorkin's offer to reprise his Oscar-nominated role as Mark Zuckerberg in the upcoming sequel, The Social Reckoning. The actor's refusal was not a casual pass but a deliberate, values-driven decision that has since reshaped the entire casting landscape of one of 2026's most anticipated films. The role has now landed with a very different face.

While the role made Eisenberg a household name, the man behind the character made him want nothing to do with it.

Jesse Eisenberg said no, and he meant it. Aaron Sorkin spent three days attempting to persuade the actor to return, believing the role rightfully belonged to him after his acclaimed performance in the 2010 original. No amount of persuasion from Sorkin was enough to change what was clearly a firm decision.

"He simply did not want to be conflated with Mark Zuckerberg anymore," Sorkin told Vanity Fair.

He then added, "he has his problems with the guy. He doesn't like kids coming up to him in airports with business cards that say 'I'm CEO, b****' for him to sign." The refusal was personal, pointed, and entirely final.

The deeper reason behind the refusal traces back to Eisenberg's discomfort with being publicly associated with Zuckerberg's real-world conduct. Eisenberg separately told BBC Radio 4 that he did not want to think of himself as associated with someone taking away fact-checking and safety concerns, making people who are already threatened in this world more threatened. Vanity Fair also covered the exchange, and playing a golfer who golfs is harmless, but playing a tech billionaire whose decisions affect millions is something else entirely.

While Jesse Eisenberg distanced himself from Mark Zuckerberg's legacy, Aaron Sorkin found his replacement at the very same party where the rejection happened.

Jeremy Strong steps in as Mark Zuckerberg for The Social Reckoning plot and cast

The Social Reckoning follows Frances Haugen, the former Facebook engineer who leaked internal documents exposing the platform's harmful effects on teenagers and its role in spreading misinformation. Jeremy Strong now plays Zuckerberg, with Mikey Madison as Haugen and Jeremy Allen White as Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz. The ensemble also includes Bill Burr, Betty Gilpin, and Wunmi Mosaku.

The Social Reckoning releases in US theatres on October 9, 2026, with no streaming platform announced yet. Jesse Eisenberg's exit leaves Strong with the unenviable task of stepping into a role that earned his predecessor an Oscar nomination. How audiences respond to an entirely new face behind Zuckerberg's blank stare will be telling.
