Why Is Sydney Sweeney Being Called ‘MAGA Barbie’? Here’s How It Started

Sydney Sweeney appears to have earned another title to her name, MAGA Barbie. In a hypothetical competition to become US President Donald Trump's No. 1 supporter, the internet thinks Sweeney stands somewhere close to Nicki Minaj. However, Sweeney's history of business or advertisement controversies alone could write itself into a swashbuckling blockbuster.

Unbothered by the collision between her fashion endorsements and political tempests, Sweeney finds her drawn in the MAGA walk of fame. But where did it all begin?

Sydney Sweeney rose to global stardom for her roles in Euphoria and The White Lotus, but it was her American Eagle "Great Jeans" advertisement that propelled her controversies. The actress' silence on the disputed ad campaign, which has been accused of promoting Eugenics propaganda, created a major online dispute, which transformed the casual denim advertisement into a cultural conflict, and paved the way for Sydney Sweeney's association to the title of MAG Barbie.

Soon, a Pandora's box of Republican-leaning sensitivities and actions unfurled from Sweeney's digital footprint, such as her mother's MAGA-themed birthday party, with the actress being at the epicenter of all negative attention. The combination of her clothing choices, which included a bright red outfit she donned at the Emmys 2025, the color being symbolically tied to MAGA imagery, and her alleged uncovered Republican voter registration details created the notorious nickname that has now gained popularity outside of fashion communities.

According to various credible reports, Sweeney registered as a Republican voter in Florida in June 2024, prior to Donald Trump claiming his second US presidency. However, public fixation on her American Eagle ad, which broke the internet with a racially charged pun, allegedly holding blue eyes and blonde hair as superior genes, led to speculations of Sweeney being a devoted Trump supporter, thereby earning her the title of MAGA Barbie, which Sweeney has recently shared her reflections on.

Sydney Sweeney dishes on her MAGA Barbie controversy, registers herself as a non-political person

Sydney Sweeney has rejected political identification as she told Cosmopolitan that she does not participate in politics. She expressed frustration at how the label MAGA Barbie and other interpretations were imposed on her without her embracing them. Unlike Nicki Minaj, who openly declared her love for Donald Trump, Sweeney chose to remain silent.

"I've never been here to talk about politics. I’ve always been here to make art, so this is just not a conversation I want to be at the forefront of. And I think because of that, people want to take it even further and use me as their own pawn. But it's somebody else assigning something to me, and I can’t control that," Sweeney told Cosmopolitan.

Whether the nickname sticks with Sweeney forever, she cannot be reactive to the controversy because, she thinks there is no winning, per the outlet. However, the actress would much rather focus on the launch of her brand new lingerie line, SYRN, while her fame grows like wildfire across politics and pop culture.
