Why Is Bella Hadid Skipping Met Gala 2026? Subtle Hints From the Fashion Icon Add to the Controversy

Published 05/04/2026, 4:02 PM EDT

Bella Hadid has had a long history with the Met Gala - about a decade-long history that started back in 2015 when a 18-year-old Hadid first appeared on the red carpet of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in a Topshop dress. Since then, she has attended the annual gala five times, with her last appearance being in 2022, where she dazzled with an ornate black Burberry corset dress. The model has, however, not attended the gala for the past four years now, and 2026 does not seem any different.

However, unlike other years, this time she might have subtly revealed the reason for her absence from the Met Gala.

What is the reason behind Bella Hadid’s absence from the Met Gala 2026?

It appears that Bella Hadid will not be attending the Met Gala for the fourth consecutive year. The supermodel clearly hinted that she would not be attending the 2026 "Costume Art" red carpet when she intentionally "liked" a video that criticized Jeff Bezos' participation in the yearly event. Notably, Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez, are the event's primary sponsors and honorary co-chairs of the Met Gala 2026.

"I love the ICE out pins but you can't wear them to the @jeffbezos backed Met Gala!" was the caption of a Friday Instagram post that the model liked. Influencer Meredith Lynch, whose social media post Hadid liked, stated in her post that she will be "dragging [stars] in perpetuity" for wearing pins on the red carpet, claiming that Jeff Bezos might be the very reason for the "mess."

In the rest of the post, Lynch goes on to target Bezos for what is happening in the country right now. Although she acknowledges that the Met Gala's proceeds support worthy causes, she still finds it absurd that Jeff Bezos, who has supported Donald Trump, who cut funding for the arts, is sponsoring this event.

Hadid’s like may be a subtle hint about her distancing herself from the Met Gala 2026, but it speaks volumes about how she feels about Bezos sponsoring the event. However, before this, one could have sworn the reason was something else.

The other reason for Bella Hadid’s indifference to the Met Gala

Over the past few years, the celebrity has largely avoided the spotlight, and that also included the red carpet of the Met Gala for almost four years. Even though Bella Hadid has never directly addressed the reason for her growing distance from the Met Gala, in a 2024 interview with Allure, she talked about her decision to take a step back from the fashion world.

“After 10 years of modeling, I realized I was putting so much energy and love and effort into something that, in the long run, wasn’t necessarily giving it back to me,” she said.

She is currently finding peace with her life in Texas with her partner, Adan Banuelos, and exploring her passion for horses. She has also dabbled a bit in acting, appearing in projects like Yellowstone and Ramy. Anyhow, it is almost confirmed that she will be on the list of celebrities to skip the Met Gala 2026.
