Explaining the reason behind this unsaid pressure on actors, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks once detailed the inner workings of Clint Eastwood's filming process and how he handles his actors.

Clint Eastwood famously shoots fast and relies on minimal takes, capturing raw spontaneity rather than over-rehearsed perfection. While this has often led to actors giving some of their career-best performances under his direction, it also leaves them shaking in their boots whenever the director breaks from this tradition and softly asks for another take, which seldom goes beyond two.

In a special appearance on the fifth episode of Warner Classics in November 2024, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks dissected the rationale behind his minimal-take approach and what it means when he asks for one more shot. While Spielberg quipped that actors automatically bring out their A-game when Eastwood goes for another take, he also acknowledges that it leaves them dumbfounded and seriously doubting what they did wrong the first time around.

“If there’s five actors in the room and he wants one more take, they’re all probably looking at each other, ‘What did I do? Was it me? Was it you?’” Spielberg explained.

Digging deeper into the mind of the director, Tom Hanks presented the trust that he puts in his actors as the reason behind the fewer-takes approach. The director is a firm believer in the notion that his actors can deliver in the moment, as opposed to the usual industry routine of heavy-handed direction. Further in the Warner Classics episode, Hanks borrows from his own experience with the director on the sets of Sully (2016) and explains that Eastwood would rather move forward than waste valuable production time on microscopic details that ultimately will not make the final cut.
