Michael Mando is well known for his extraordinary performance in his fan-favorite role as Nacho Varga in the Better Call Saul series. And most recently, he starred in Marvel's Spider-Man: Brand New Day. But before joining the superhero franchise, the actor was lined up for another huge project. 

Mando was set to be part of Apple's crime drama Sinking Spring. However, that opportunity came to an abrupt end due to a conflict that reportedly led to Mando's exit from the series. And the production quickly recast the role with a Golden Globe-winning actor.

Years later, here is what reportedly happened behind the scenes.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Michael Mando, who was originally cast in Apple's series Sinking Spring, exited the project following a clash with a co-star. While little is known about the incident, including what caused the disagreement or which co-star was involved, the producers reportedly tried to resolve the situation. However, the team ultimately decided to part ways with Mando.

Sinking Spring was the show's original working title before it was renamed Dope Thief. This is the same title as Dennis Tafoya's novel on which the series is based. The adaptation was written by Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Peter Craig, with Ridley Scott serving as an executive producer and directing the first episode.

The series follows two lifelong friends from Philadelphia who pose as DEA agents to rob drug dealers. Their scheme, which appears profitable, quickly takes a turn. They accidentally target a major narcotics operation that is already under surveillance by the real DEA. Brian Tyree Henry stars as Ray Driscoll, while Ving Rhames, Amir Arison, Liz Caribel, Nesta Cooper, and Idris Debrand were also part of the cast. And Mando was originally cast as Manny Carvalho.

And following Mando's departure, the production replaced him with another award winning actor for the role in the series.

After Michael Mando's exit, Wagner Moura was cast as Manny Carvalho, who is a good and loyal friend to Ray in the Apple TV series Dope Thief. The Brazilian actor is best known for playing Pablo Escobar in Narcos. More recently, he won the Golden Globe for his performance in The Secret Agent.

With the win, he became the first Brazilian actor to receive the honor. Dope Thief has since become one of Moura's most acclaimed television projects. The crime drama holds an 86% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and is available to stream on Apple TV+.
