Apple TV has assembled a cast that balances heavyweight talent with the emotional range the story demands, pairing a detective trying to protect his family with a killer who is always one step ahead.

What is Apple TV's Nocturne based on?

Nocturne is based on two novels by Lars Kepler, The Sandman and Lazarus, both part of the Joona Linna crime series. Kepler is the pen name of Swedish husband-and-wife writing duo Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril and Alexander Ahndoril, whose series has sold more than 20 million copies in 40 languages. The Sandman is the fourth book in the series and Lazarus the seventh, and both revolve around the notorious serial killer Jurek Walter.

The books also pair a veteran detective with Saga Bauer, a young inspector sent in to get close to the killer, a dynamic that carries over to the series. Apple TV’s adaptation originally went by the title Lazarus before being renamed Nocturne, and it brings the bestselling series to the screen for the first time on October 30th.
