“Who Walks Away From That?” - The Surprising Reason ‘Young Sheldon’ Never Got Season 8

Young Sheldon never got a season 8 because its creators chose to end the hit comedy on their own terms. The CBS series wrapped in 2024 after seven seasons, even though ratings were still huge. Behind the scenes, two Hollywood strikes, shrinking budgets, and young stars growing up had reshaped the show's future for months. A new excerpt from a book by Jessica Radloff now explains how that decision landed.

Viewers still wonder who would pull the plug on a top-rated comedy, and the answer starts with one unconvinced creator.

Why Young Sheldon ended at its peak instead of returning for season 8

Chuck Lorre, Steve Molaro, and Steve Holland ended Young Sheldon because they felt the story was complete and wanted to leave while it was a hit. CBS wanted more, and the ratings supported it.

"Who walks away from that?" Holland said of the Zoom reaction in the excerpt from The Hollywood Reporter.

He then explained that "when you walk away, when it’s still great, and don’t let it sort of taper off into mediocrity."

The Hollywood Reporter excerpt adds that the 2023 strikes shrank the final season from a hoped-for 22 episodes to 14. Molaro did not want to make the show without George Sr. and with Sheldon away at Caltech, a story The Big Bang Theory already told. Budget cuts were possible, and Holland said the team had no interest in a slimmer version. They pitched CBS a Georgie and Mandy spin-off.

While a spin-off took shape, the cast's earnings hinted at what was riding on the show.

How much the Young Sheldon cast makes in salary and net worth

Pay figures for the Young Sheldon cast come from older estimates. Iain Armitage got a raise after season three, which meant $50,000 per episode for seasons four and five. His net worth sits at around $5.6 million, according to Nine.com.au figures. Annie Potts, known for Toy Story and Designing Women, leads the group with over $11 million, helped by booming real estate on top of her acting income.

Montana Jordan, who plays Georgie Cooper, has a net worth of almost $3 million. Zoe Perry sits at about $1.1 million, and she carries on a family tradition since her mother, Laurie Metcalf, played Sheldon's mother in The Big Bang Theory. Lance Barber, who plays the football coach dad, has roughly $1 million. These numbers explain why an exit looked unthinkable.
