Euphoria goes all out in portraying high school drama, with teenage characters making impulsive, often unexpected mistakes, alongside a mix of bizarre individuals and sometimes perfect human beings who are not as they appear to be. One such character is Cassie and Lexi's mother, Suze Howard. Although her role was relatively minor in Season 1, it became compelling in the seasons that followed.

To bring this fragile yet layered character to life, Sam Levinson cast a 50-year-old actress with an impressive resume and immense experience.

Before appearing in Euphoria, Alanna Ubach had already built an extensive career across films and television. One of her more recent roles is in the comedy-drama series Ted, where she plays Susan Bennett. Other projects on her resume include See Dad Run, Guilty Party, and The Flight Attendant.

Many viewers may also recognize her as Serena McGuire in Legally Blonde and its sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde. She has also appeared in films like Meet the Fockers and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. Apart from the live-action roles, Ubach has lent her voice to several projects.

She voiced Mamá Imelda in Coco and played Jo Hernandez-Frumpkis in Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce. However, her character, Suze, is currently stealing the spotlight in Euphoria. In Season 2, she is seen proudly supporting Lexi’s (played by Maude Apatow) play while also allowing Cassie, played by Sydney Sweeney, to face the consequences of her actions.

So, a character who initially appeared mostly sipping wine and watching television reveals herself to be far more layered.

Alanna Ubach talks about her character, Suze

Alanna Ubach, who plays Suze, spoke about her character in Euphoria, explaining that Suze is doing her best to raise her daughters, given her current circumstances. The actress also explained how parents often struggle to understand their kids in this current era, where social media has a massive impact on teenagers. Meanwhile, she also suggested that her character may be dealing with clinical depression.

“I think there’s a lot of guilt. Knowing that had she made better choices, had she worked on her marriage, these kids wouldn’t feel they have to act out the way they’ve been doing. My guess is if you really peel the layers, Suze is probably clinically depressed,” She told Vulture.

And Ubach did not randomly choose the role for Euphoria. Alanna Ubach recalled that the character reminded her of her friend’s mother, Linda Morale, who was more of a friend to her daughters than a strict parent, and that drew her to the role from the start. And it seems she delivered her best. Whether it is her comedic timing or her questionable parenting choices, like allowing Cassie and her friends to drink at her house, fans have embraced her character in Euphoria.
