The glittering lights of the Dolby Theatre fade, but for Hollywood’s elite, the real production is only just beginning behind closed doors. Wolfgang Puck began his journey as a young chef in Austria before moving to Los Angeles and revolutionizing California cuisine at his flagship restaurant, Spago. For years, the most exclusive Oscar party was actually a private event hosted by the legendary literary agent Irving Lazar, aka Swifty, where Puck served the elite.
“Forget about the Governor’s Ball, no big star went to that at the time,” Puck told Robb Report about how the official Governors Ball was often ignored.
Everything shifted in 1994 following the passing of Lazar, leaving a massive void in the night's festivities that the Academy was eager to fill. Organizers approached Puck to cater their official Academy Awards Governors Ball, hoping his star power would attract the A-listers who previously skipped the event. Puck accepted the challenge.
Since taking over, Wolfgang Puck has transformed the evening from a formal sit-down dinner into a vibrant, multi-station celebration that reflects the energy of Hollywood. He has now spent thirty-years years at the helm, managing a team of hundreds of chefs to ensure every plate is perfect.
His signature style blends sophisticated luxury with comforting classics that keep the world's biggest icons returning to his table.

Every year, Wolfgang Puck balances these beloved traditions with global influences, such as the shrimp Pad Thai with lemongrass that highlighted the 2025 celebration. The menu continues this legacy, featuring Bougie Tots with caviar and English-inspired fish and chips to cater to a diverse international crowd.
According to a recent podcast, Good Morning America, for the 2026 Governors Ball, Puck also teased a menu that bridges the gap between traditional luxury and modern dietary preferences, emphasizing his commitment to inclusive fine dining. He spoke passionately about a new Korean-style eggplant dish designed to ensure that even those seeking meatless options do not feel they are missing out on the celebration.
The veteran chef even managed a clever nod to the nominated film One Battle After Another, suggesting a title change to one dish after another to better suit his kitchen's pace.
“I just watched One Battle After Another, I would change it to one dish after another for the other” Wolfgang Puck said.
