HBO's Lanterns has quickly turned into one of the year's most dissected superhero dramas, with each new episode sparking fresh debate among viewers. Behind its most emotionally loaded chapter sits a name many casual watchers are only now discovering. Vanessa Baden Kelly's journey through television has been anything but ordinary, weaving through activism, acting, and writers' rooms long before this moment. Her path to shaping John Stewart's story did not happen overnight.

While viewers debate the changes to John Stewart's origin, the woman behind those choices has a story just as compelling as the one she wrote.

Vanessa Baden Kelly is the writer and co-executive producer credited with Lanterns episode three, titled OutKast, the installment that sent social media into overdrive. She also co-wrote episode two, Trust Fall, alongside showrunner Chris Mundy, before taking full charge of the origin-heavy chapter that followed. Kelly built the episode around John Stewart's interview with a Guardian of the Universe, using flashbacks to trace his childhood, his family, and his path into the Corps.

Long before entering writers' rooms, Kelly built a career in front of the camera, playing Vanessa on Gullah Gullah Island and later Kyra on Kenan and Kel. She stepped away from acting to focus on community organizing before returning with the web series Giants, which earned her a Daytime Emmy win in 2019. Her writing credits since then span Animal Kingdom, The S** Lives of College Girls, and Lady in the Lake, alongside her 2021 essay collection on Black womanhood and identity.

While Kelly's career took her across genres, Lanterns itself needed a very different kind of transformation to feel real.

Lanterns was filmed primarily across Los Angeles County, California. Piru, a small historic town in Ventura County, stood in for the fictional Rushville, Nebraska, with storefronts along Center Street redressed to match the Midwestern look. Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank also played a major role, housing the constructed Stewart family home used throughout several episodes.

Visual effects teams digitally removed the mountains surrounding Piru, since the natural landscape did not match the flat horizon Nebraska is known for. That level of detail helped sell the isolated, small-town atmosphere the story leans on so heavily. Vanessa Baden Kelly's writing gave that world its emotional core, and together the locations and the scripts turned Rushville into a place worth returning to each week.
