A new hybrid monster emerges in Resident Evil
Co-written by Zach Cregger and Shay Hatten, the film features Austin Abrams as a survivor in Resident Evil. The recent trailer focuses on his character, Brian, as he attempts to escape an abandoned city and encounters a trapped, mutated human who looks very similar to Dune villain Baron Harkonnen, as pointed out by IGN.
According to the trailer, this n**** huge, potbellied, and hairless creature represents a hybrid monster designed to emphasize the gruesome physical decay inherent. This specific creature brings a sense of dread that mirrors the legendary horror of previous adaptations while leaning into a frenetic, action-heavy style.
"you see a gigantic, obese, n****, hairless man just sitting facing you (in the trailer)", Zach Cregger describes the character to IGN.
The design choices aim for a more grounded tone, moving away from the superhuman tropes of past films to focus on the terrifying reality of a biological apocalypse. Columbia Pictures is set to bring this horrifying vision to theaters on September 18, 2026, marking a new chapter for the franchise.
Fans are particularly curious about the creative influences behind such a haunting and physically imposing primary antagonist.
Inspiration from literary nightmares
Director Zach Cregger revealed, while speaking to IGN, that the striking appearance of this hairless, obese man is a deliberate nod to the character of The Judge from the novel Blood Meridian. He expressed a deep love for the image of a seven-foot-tall, pale figure and wanted to recreate that unsettling feeling of coming around a corner and finding something so massive and silent.
Cregger noted that he wanted to spark immediate questions about what was about to happen in that dark sewer. While the film does not utilize the specific Nemesis character from the video games, this grotesque figure serves as a spiritual tribute to that iconic stalker.

The director emphasized that the encounter in the film is something he is particularly happy with, suggesting a confrontation that is both surprising and brutal. It serves as a formidable replacement for the traditional Terminator-style hunters that fans have grown accustomed to seeing on screen.
“I don't have a nemesis in this movie that the games use, which is like this gigantic hulking Terminator that's following you. But this is also like a little bit of a nod to the Nemesis to a degree", he said. Produced by Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions, the movie looks to redefine what it means to survive a biological catastrophe.
