The Marvel rumor mill is buzzing once again, with another name emerging in the conversation. In recent weeks, Kit Connor, Samara Weaving, and several other actors have been linked to Marvel as the studio continues its search for performers who could bring the iconic mutants to life. Now, another name, Suzy Bemba, is rumored to join Marvel.

She is in the running for the role of Storm, a powerful mutant who can control the weather and atmosphere. While there has been no official confirmation yet, it is worth taking a closer look at Bemba and her career so far in Hollywood.

Suzy Bemba is a 26-year-old French actress who already has an Oscar-winning film on her resume. Throughout her career, she has taken on multiple smaller and notable roles across film and television. Her credits include the teen horror film Kandisha, Homecoming, Ma France à Moi, the French series L’Opéra, Drift, and A Second Life. She was also selected for the European Shooting Stars program at the 2024 Berlin International Film Festival. 

But Bemba’s most notable performance came in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Oscar-winning Poor Things. She played a French prostitute, Toinette, who introduced Emma Stone’s Bella to socialism. And for the actress, Toinette remains one of her favorite characters she has played in her career. 

“She is a socialist and a feminist and whatever pain she has, she’s never in pain because she is a Black female," she told The Hollywood Reporter.

She has slowly dipped her toes into the industry and found her footing. However, what many may not know about the actress is that acting was neither her full-time job nor part of her original plans.

Along with her education, Suzy Bemba trained in ballet for 10 years and took vocal lessons for six years. However, when an injury stopped her from pursuing dance, she decided to explore acting as another way to express herself. She began auditioning for roles and eventually joined a French talent agency.

At the same time, Bemba continued her education and remained determined to attend medical school. She balanced her acting career with following her dream of pursuing medicine. In 2024, she attended the César Revelations dinner, which celebrates up-and-coming French talent, and a day later, she sat for her final exams in Marseille.

"I wanted to go to med school, that was always the dream, so when I graduated, that’s what I did,” she says. “I kind of forgot about the idea of acting," she told The Hollywood Reporter.

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Bemba has explained that her parents want her to complete medical school. She even joked that her mother does not consider acting a “real job.” However, she admitted that she loves being part of both worlds and does not want to give either one up.

"It’s a lot, but in some ways, it takes the pressure off, because I’m not working [as an actor], I’m busy studying. I’m not worried about finding the next job,” she said. “When I spend too much time just acting, I feel like my brain is shrinking, like I’m missing something.”

Balancing two very different paths also means Bemba has to be selective about the roles she takes on. She said that as “a Black actress and a Black woman, I have the responsibility to not play characters that perpetuate wrong or harmful stereotypes.” While a Marvel role would certainly be an impressive addition to her resume, a lot would need to fall into place for that opportunity to happen.
