The late Star Trek icon shared over a decade of marriage with Sunny Ozell, a musician whose career began long before the pair met. Their romance started with a restaurant shift, a Shakespeare production, and a remarkably well-timed invitation.

So, who is the woman who captured the legendary actor's heart?

Sunny Ozell is an American singer-songwriter who grew up in Reno, Nevada, where music took over her timetable early. At four, she began learning classical violin through the Suzuki method. By twelve, she was singing with the Reno Opera Company, building a musical résumé while most kids were still negotiating bedtime.

Her tastes eventually gravitated toward blues, jazz, soul, and Americana. She made New York City her musical headquarters, performing in intimate venues and developing a style rooted in those traditions. Her debut album, 'Take It with Me,' arrived in 2015, followed by Overnight Lows in 2020.

She also slipped into her husband's science-fiction universe in 2022, appearing with her band in Star Trek: Picard and performing 'Take You Down.' Consider it a musical crossover episode with actual starship clearance. Her career followed its own trajectory, built on years of training, live performances, and recording.

And the story of how a Shakespearean knight met this American singer sounds suspiciously like a romantic comedy written by the universe.

Back in 2008, Sunny Ozell was waiting tables at Franny's, a Brooklyn restaurant, when Patrick Stewart visited during his run in Macbeth at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. She told him she had missed out on tickets. Stewart offered his phone number to arrange a seat when the production reached Broadway.

One backstage visit and dinner later, the romance was underway. The couple married on September 7, 2013, in Nevada, with Ian McKellen officiating. Yes, Gandalf oversaw Professor X's wedding.  There was even a paperwork plot twist: McKellen's credentials were invalid in Nevada, prompting a second ceremony in Los Angeles.

In later interviews, Stewart spoke warmly about Ozell's intelligence and memory. On their eleventh anniversary in 2024, he wrote on Instagram that she made everything “better and brighter.” Stewart died at his Los Angeles home on October 28, 2026, aged 86, following an illness involving Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia. His spokesperson confirmed that Ozell was by his side.
