Canadian actor Elliot Page is to play the Greek soldier Sinon in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, ending months of speculation that the actor would play Achilles. Sinon is not a major character in Homer's Odyssey, which is why the role reveal surprised many. However, he is better known from later accounts of the Trojan War, particularly Virgil’s Aeneid, where he plays a key part in one of the most famous acts of deception in Greek mythology.

In the traditional myth, the Greeks fake a retreat from the decade-long Trojan War, sailing off to the nearby island of Tenedos, but leaving behind the huge Wooden Horse. Sinon purposely lingers and permits himself to be taken by the Trojans. He claims the horse is a sacred gift to Athena that will make Troy invulnerable if it is brought within the city walls. His story persuades the Trojans to bring the horse into the city, unaware that Odysseus and other Greek warriors are hidden in it. Then, Sinon signals the return of the Greek fleet, and Troy falls that night.

Sinon is not mentioned in Homer's Odyssey, making Elliot Page's casting a strong indication that Nolan is drawing from the broader mythology of the Trojan War rather than adapting the epic poem alone. By introducing a character so closely tied to the Trojan Horse, the film appears poised to explore the events leading up to Odysseus' legendary journey home. It is also potentially blending Homer's Odyssey with stories from later classical texts to create a more expansive retelling of the myth.

How The Odyssey unfolds in Christopher Nolan's adaptation

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey follows Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, on his perilous 10-year journey home after the Trojan War. Using his wits he must face storms, mythical creatures and the wrath of Poseidon to survive encounters with characters such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, Circe, the Sirens and Calypso. Meanwhile, his kingdom descends into chaos as suitors pursue his wife, Penelope, and threaten his son, Telemachus. In the meantime, Odysseus returns in disguise and now must regain his family and throne.

Meanwhile, Nolan has yet to disclose precisely how Sinon will play into The Odyssey, but Elliot Page’s casting provides an intriguing insight into the filmmaker’s vision. Taking inspiration from the broader Trojan War mythology and Homer’s epic, Nolan seems to be creating a larger retelling of Odysseus’ legendary journey, rather than simply giving a cinematic homage to the Homeric text. As production continues to shine more light on how this ambitious adaptation will bring one of history’s greatest epics to the big screen, more character reveals are expected.
