Few Marvel projects have generated as much anticipation as VisionQuest. As the spinoff of WandaVision, one of the franchise’s most celebrated Disney+ series, the show carries the weight of a story fans have wanted to see continue for years. With Paul Bettany returning as Vision and James Spader’s Ultron back in the mix, the series has built buzz well before its premiere.
Amid the big returning names, one newer face has drawn plenty of curiosity: Ruaridh Mollica, the actor who plays Thomas Shepherd.
Meet Ruaridh Mollica, the actor behind Thomas Shepherd in VisionQuest
Ruaridh Mollica is a Scottish-Italian actor, writer, and director born on October 14, 1999. He was born in Prato, Italy, to a Scottish mother and an Italian father, and later attended Broughton High School in Edinburgh. According to IMDb, he stands 5 feet 10 inches (about 1.78 metres) tall. His work began in childhood, with a television debut at 12 in an episode of the BBC One series Case Histories.
He later appeared in the Channel 5 series Witness Number 3 and the BBC Three series Red Rose, both in 2022, and earned a British Independent Film Award nomination for his performance in the 2024 film Sebastian. He also appeared in HBO’s satire The Franchise, a comedy that follows the crew of an unloved franchise movie and in which he played Jaz.
That same year, Screen International named him one of its Rising Stars Scotland.

Acting was not the only path he considered, as he graduated with a computer science degree from Heriot-Watt University in 2021, as per his LinkedIn. VisionQuest now marks his biggest step into the Marvel universe, where he plays Tommy Maximoff.
In WandaVision, Wanda Maximoff created the twin sons Billy and Tommy inside the reality she built, and the boys disappeared when it collapsed. That history makes the return of Tommy, now played by Mollica as an older version of the character, one of the biggest pull points of VisionQuest, and it makes the actor stepping into that role one of the series’ most talked-about newcomers.
With so much riding, on Tommy’s return, what VisionQuest is built around has audiences talking.
What is the plot of Marvel's VisionQuest?
According to the official synopsis, VisionQuest picks up with a rebooted Vision who has been hiding after escaping people who wanted to weaponise him. Searching for new meaning, he turns to the AI personas built into his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S., and the infamous Ultron. The series arrives five years after White Vision disappeared from Westview in the finale of WandaVision.

His quiet existence ends when a bounty is placed on his head, forcing him to flee alongside Thomas, a mysterious boy who may be Vision’s son reincarnated. As Vision tries to evade capture, he must confront his own nature, resist Ultron’s influence and unravel the mystery of his young companion in order to survive.
With VisionQuest arriving on Disney+, Ruaridh Mollica’s turn as Thomas Shepherd places him at the emotional centre of Vision’s journey. For an actor whose career has built steadily from Scottish stages and screens to HBO and now Marvel, the role could mark his biggest breakthrough yet.
