House of the Dragon has never struggled to introduce memorable players. The series turned King Viserys I Targaryen into one of television's most heartbreaking rulers and gave Prince Aemond Targaryen greater emotional complexity through Vhagar's tragic loss of control. With Season 3 approaching, the world of Westeros is expanding again, this time with Lord Ormund Hightower, the formidable Lord of Oldtown and the Green faction's supreme military commander in the Reach.
It is little wonder that fans eagerly awaiting Season 3 are equally eager to discover the actor stepping into Lord Ormund Hightower's imposing boots.

James Norton has officially joined House of the Dragon Season 3 as Lord Ormund Hightower, one of the Green faction's most formidable military leaders. Although the character was repeatedly referenced throughout Season 2, his long-awaited on-screen debut finally brings one of House Hightower's most influential figures into the heart of the Targaryen civil war. Oldtown has arrived, and it is bringing an army.
Ormund succeeds his father, Lord Hobert Hightower, as Lord of Oldtown and head of House Hightower. He is also the nephew of Ser Otto Hightower and first cousin to Queen Dowager Alicent Hightower and Ser Gwayne Hightower, placing him at the center of one of Westeros' most politically powerful families. He also carries Vigilance, the ancestral Valyrian steel sword of House Hightower.
Norton's casting was first reported exclusively by Variety, making him the first major new addition officially announced for Season 3. His arrival is especially significant because Ormund commands the Hightower host marching north while fighting alongside Prince Daeron Targaryen, whose actor was recently revealed. Together, they become one of Team Green's most dangerous military partnerships.
The silver-and-green armor is only part of the story, because James Norton already has several qualities tailor-made for Oldtown.
Why James Norton is a good fit
James Norton feels like a natural choice for Lord Ormund Hightower because he effortlessly blends aristocratic poise with an underlying sense of danger. Showrunner Ryan Condal has likened Ormund to Tywin Lannister, a commander whose authority speaks long before he does. Norton has already mastered that commanding presence, whether unsettling audiences as Tommy Lee Royce or carrying himself with quiet confidence in historical dramas.

The casting also makes perfect visual sense. Norton's sharp features, imposing stature, and effortless nobility fit seamlessly alongside Rhys Ifans and Freddie Fox, making the Hightowers look convincingly cut from the same prestigious cloth. Once he slips into House Hightower's silver-and-green armor, he looks every bit the Lord of Oldtown, proving that this casting feels as inevitable as the character's long-awaited arrival.
