Mariska Hargitay has reached another remarkable chapter in her television career as she prepares to host the 78th Emmy Awards on September 14, 2026, live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The Law & Order: SVU star will lead the ceremony on NBC and Peacock at 8 p.m. ET, bringing her long relationship with the network into the awards-show spotlight. Mariska Hargitay is married to actor Peter Hermann, whom she met in a rather fitting place: the set of Law & Order.  Speaking to E! News in June 2026, she described their approach as “disciplined curiosity.”

“Really being curious about the other person and how they experience something and really listening…if there is ever a disagreement or argument or we get scared or tight, I know that he will always think about it or think about what I said,” Hargitay shared.

The couple's life, however, extends well beyond their Hollywood careers. Hargitay and Hermann have built a family of five, with their children becoming an important part of the private world surrounding the actress.

Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann have three children. Their eldest, Miklos Friedrich Hermann, was born in 2006, while their daughter Amaya Josephine Hermann was adopted in April 2011. Their third son, Andrew Nicolas Hermann, was welcomed in 2011. The family has generally maintained a low profile, allowing the children to grow up without becoming regular fixtures of their parents' public careers.

The timing of their family story is particularly striking because Hargitay's professional life was already deeply established when she became a mother.

Her childhood was touched by enormous fame, but also by profound loss after Mansfield died in a car accident in 1967 when the Law & Order actress was only three years old.

Mickey Hargitay later helped raise her with his wife Ellen Siano, whom Peter Hargitay regarded as a mother figure. 

That complicated family history became central to My Mom Jayne, Hargitay's deeply personal documentary about Mansfield. The film also explored a long-held family secret concerning her biological father, while Hargitay continued to describe Mickey as her true father in the emotional sense. The project transformed a piece of Hollywood history into something much more personal, giving audiences a glimpse behind the woman they have watched play Olivia Benson for more than two decades. 

Now, that same performer is stepping onto the Emmy stage. The 78th Emmy Awards will air live on NBC and stream on Peacock on September 14, placing Hargitay at the center of an evening celebrating the very medium that made her a household name.
