One of the year's most talked-about events, the Met Gala celebrates different concepts, artistic movements, and legendary names from history through its annual Costume Institute exhibition. For its next display, one of the most renowned names in the fashion world, John Galliano, is set to be honored with a nine-month exhibition sponsored by the Met’s Costume Institute, focusing on his career and work. He is best known for his work at Christian Dior and, later, Maison Margiela.
However, the announcement was met with intense backlash from people around the world. Many urged the Met to reconsider its decision. As the criticism continues to grow, the decade-old incident, which has now led to backlash against the fashion designer and the Met, also gained traction.

The controversy and backlash involving John Galliano goes all the way back to 2011, when the famous designer was accused of making antisemitic remarks toward people in Paris. Later, The Sun published a video in which Galliano could be heard making offensive comments toward other customers. In the video, he was heard saying, “I love Hitler.”
Amid the growing backlash against the designer, Galliano was fired from his position as creative director of Christian Dior. He had been part of the fashion house for 15 years and was largely responsible for giving it a distinctive creative direction. Later, the designer attributed his hateful comments to his addiction and apologized.

He also called his comments “foul” in a 2023 documentary titled High & Low — John Galliano. Galliano eventually returned to the fashion scene as he secured the position of creative director at Maison Margiela. He spent a decade at the fashion house and presented several unique collections, including the 2024 couture collection.
His creations have also found their way onto the Met Gala red carpet, with celebrities such as Zendaya and Kim Kardashian wearing his designs to the event. However, more recently, Galliano was accused of making antisemitic remarks in 2019 by Julie Macklowe, although his spokesperson denied the allegations, as reported by The Times. So, even after all these years, the internet was quick to resurface the incident and criticize the Met for their decision.

As the criticism continues to grow, the Met Gala is also reportedly looking to make changes to its schedule.
Met Gala considers date change
Amid the backlash, Met trustees and board members have also been making efforts to address the controversy. As of now, the team is reportedly considering whether to move the date of next year’s Met Gala from its usual slot on the first Monday in May to the following week. This would ensure that the event does not coincide with Yom HaShoah, also known as Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day, which falls on the originally scheduled date.

Meanwhile, the criticism has continued to grow, with Julie Menin, the speaker of the New York City Council, calling the decision a “serious mistake.” Arne Glimcher is also among those who have criticized the decision. Met Gala is one of the biggest events of the year, and many people will be watching it closely either for the art or the fashion game by celebrities. So, how the situation will ultimately be handled next year remains to be seen.
