Like many royal dynasties, the Game of Thrones universe has several recurring names passed down through generations. The Targaryens, especially, often name their children after their ancestors, and the show itself expanded with two more spin-offs. This often causes confusion about the family tree and the characters’ origin.

And one such name is Joffrey. As many know, there are more than two Joffreys in George R. R. Martin's universe of Targaryens and dragons. So, who is Joffrey Targaryen in House of the Dragon

Joffrey Targaryen in House of the Dragon is the son of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and her first husband, Ser Laenor Velaryon. He is their third-born child and the only surviving son after the deaths of his older brothers, Jacaerys and Lucerys. He is related to the Targaryens through his mother, but Joffrey officially bears the Velaryon name, not Targaryen.

However, like his older brothers, Joffrey is also rumored to be the biological son of Ser Harwin Strong rather than Laenor Velaryon. And the character, which appeared in both seasons 1 and 2, is portrayed by actor Oscar Eskinazi in the series. In season 3 of the show, the character is kept away from the conflict to keep him safe.

Following Rhaenyra's second marriage to Prince Daemon Targaryen, the two had three children, Aegon III, Viserys II, and Visenya, who are called Targaryens. Now, another Joffrey appears in Game of Thrones. However, he is a Baratheon, not a Targaryen. The character is portrayed by Irish actor Jack Gleeson.

Now, as for Joffrey in House of the Dragon, the character is also named after yet another Joffrey in the series.

Who is Joffrey Velaryon named after?

Joffrey is legally the son of Ser Laenor Velaryon. And as per the books, Laenor insists on naming the child after his lover, Joffrey Lonmouth. Joffrey Lonmouth was previously murdered by Ser Criston Cole. Rhaenyra was initially upset and frustrated, believing the name could fuel further speculation among those who question Joffrey's father. However, she ultimately agrees to Laenor's request and accepts the name.

In House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 3, Joffrey is mentioned briefly during a dispute. Rhaenyra refused to legitimize Corlys Velaryon's illegitimate son, Addam, as a Velaryon, believing that doing so would undermine Joffrey's status as Laenor Velaryon's legal heir. This is when Corlys publicly accuses Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey of being "b*******." And this is only the beginning, with the tension bound to rise in the future of the show.
