Marvel’s VisionQuest already looks like one of the strangest swings in the MCU’s Disney+ era. White Vision is hiding, Ultron is somehow back, Tommy Maximoff is in the mix, and Tony Stark’s old artificial intelligences are apparently walking around like people inside Vision’s head.

It has the energy of a superhero mystery crossed with a very expensive identity crisis. Then Marvel added another deep-cut android to the chaos.

Jocasta, a character whose comic history makes Ultron’s return immediately more complicated.

T’Nia Miller, known for The Haunting of Bly Manor and The Fall of the House of Usher, plays Jocasta in VisionQuest. Marvel’s latest footage has already shown her confronting Vision, while Disney officially lists Miller among the series’ principal cast. In the comics, Jocasta is one of Ultron’s strangest and most fascinating creations. Marvel traces her introduction to Avengers #162, after Ultron creates a female automaton intended to become his bride.

He uses the Wasp’s mental patterns as the foundation for her personality, expecting his creation to obey him. Janet van Dyne’s heroic influence has the opposite effect. Jocasta rebels against Ultron, eventually sides with the Avengers and develops an identity completely separate from her creator. Marvel later placed her in the role of Tony Stark’s chief robotics and AI ethicist.

She also arrives with enough hardware to make Vision pay attention. Jocasta’s titanium-steel body provides enhanced strength, speed and durability. She can project electromagnetic energy through her eyes, generate defensive force fields and process information through advanced artificial intelligence. The MCU version currently appears far less friendly, with promotional material presenting her as a revenge-driven figure and showing her battling Vision.

Jocasta gives Vision one dangerous AI relationship to untangle, but another artificial intelligence is carrying baggage directly from Tony Stark’s final moments.

VisionQuest is also bringing back F.R.I.D.A.Y., Tony Stark’s replacement for J.A.R.V.I.S., with Orla Brady portraying the character. Disney’s official synopsis reveals that Vision consults AI personas embedded within his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S. and Ultron. 

F.R.I.D.A.Y.’s return also carries an unexpectedly emotional connection to Avengers: Endgame. Showrunner Terry Matalas pointed out that she was there when Tony Stark died and questioned what that experience would mean for an AI programmed to protect him. The series appears ready to explore the grief, responsibility and possible guilt attached to being unable to save the person at the center of her existence.

That makes VisionQuest much stranger than a simple android adventure. Vision is trying to understand himself while surrounded by machines carrying memories, loyalties and unresolved trauma from Tony’s world. Jocasta brings Ultron’s twisted concept of family into that equation, while F.R.I.D.A.Y. keeps Iron Man’s legacy painfully alive.
