Daeron Targaryen is played by none other than Henry Ashton, born 10 February 1991, who is an English actor from Bletchley, Buckinghamshire, England, who has quickly become known for his work in both television and film since beginning his professional acting career in 2021. Ashton grew up in Buckinghamshire and, after finishing school, spent about a decade working in a variety of jobs before deciding to pursue acting full-time. He trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, graduating in 2022, and has since appeared in several notable productions.
Ashton made his feature film debut as Kevin Shields in the biographical drama Creation Stories (2021), and shortly after drama school, he had a guest role as Sandy Hammond in season seven of the Starz fantasy series Outlander. In 2024, he gained wider recognition for his leading television roles: as Stan Dudley in the Amazon Prime fantasy series My Lady Jane and as Max Hastings in the BBC Three/Netflix adaptation of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, both of which helped establish him as a rising screen presence.
And now, he is seen as Daeron “the Drunken” Targaryen in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The latest episode of the show introduces Daeron Targaryen, though this character differs from the one seen in House of the Dragon. In the Game of Thrones prequel, Targaryen is the eldest son of King Maekar I Targaryen and his wife, Dyanna Dayne. He was named after his grandfather, King Daeron II Targaryen.

Daeron is one of the rare Targaryens known for having prophetic dreams. As per the series, he has three younger brothers, Aerion, Aemon, and Aegon, and two younger sisters, Daella and Rhae. Later in life, Daeron became the heir to the Iron Throne after his father ascended as king. He married Kiera of Tyrosh, and together they had a daughter named Vaella.
However, Daeron died of an illness before he could ever rule, and his early death played a crucial role in the succession crisis that followed Maekar’s reign. Although the new show has a very different setup from the wars, bloodshed, and political intrigue of earlier series like House of the Dragon, fans are delighted to return to Westeros through a different timeline.
That said, there is constant chatter about whether familiar characters from other series will eventually make an appearance.
Will Maester Aemon appear in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?
Fans will remember Aemon from Game of Thrones as the wise, elderly Night Watchman and a mentor at Castle Black. He was the great-uncle of Daenerys Targaryen and, without ever knowing it, the great-great-uncle of Jon Snow. While there are rumors of him appearing in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, there is no confirmation.

The timeline of the new series is set decades before the time in Game of Thrones. In this timeline, Aemon would likely be a young boy, possibly already beginning his training at the Citadel to become a Maester. While the original novellas mention him as Egg’s older brother, who gives Aegon his famous nickname, Aemon never actually appears on the page in The Hedge Knight.
That said, the door is not completely closed to the other characters to make an appearance. Showrunner Ira Parker has hinted that the series may mention familiar names. As for appearance, fans will have to watch the series to find out.
