When it comes to the DC Universe, it is not just the heroes but the terrifying legacy of its villains, from cosmic forces like Darkseid to figures that blur the line between human and monster. However, among them stands a name that is not tied to one face or one story, but a shifting identity carried by multiple villains over time, Clayface, often clashing with Batman. And now, with a new riveting horror-thriller centred around Clayface taking headlines for 2026, the shape-shifting terror is stepping into the spotlight like never before.

So who exactly is Clayface, and what makes this shape-shifting figure one of DC’s most disturbing creations? Here is everything you need to know.

Often seen crossing paths with Batman, Clayface is not a single identity but a shifting mantle carried by multiple villains in DC Comics. The most iconic version, Basil Karlo, first appeared in Detective Comics #40 in 1940, created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, as a B-list actor who turned to crime by adopting the identity of a villain he once portrayed on screen. Driven by rejection and obsession, Karlo blurred performance and reality, descending into madness as his horror role turned into real-life killings, partly inspired by The Phantom of the Opera.

As the legend grew, Clayface refused to stay one story, evolving through forms like Matt Hagen, Preston Payne, and Sondra Fuller, each born from science, accident, or ambition. Yet beneath every transformation lies the same haunting truth, a body out of control and an identity that refuses to hold. In 2009, Clayface was ranked among the greatest comic book villains of all time, a recognition that sealed his legacy as one of DC’s most haunting and disturbingly unforgettable creations.

Absolute Batman Is Getting His Gaming Debut but With a Twist

And if you think that is all to this horror-driven villain, the twisted legacy of Clayface has gone far beyond the comics, finding its way onto screens and into video games over the years.

Clayface adaptations: From screen to video games

Clayface’s twisted legacy has not remained confined to comics, as the character has been widely adapted across films over the years. With the ability to morph into any identity, mimic voices and DNA, and regenerate from near destruction, Clayface made animated appearances in The Lego Batman Movie and Batman: Hush to action-driven entries like Batman Unlimited: Monster Mayhem, the villain has constantly evolved on screen. On television and beyond, Clayface has remained equally impactful, with Gotham and Pennyworth among some of his most iconic animated versions in Batman: The Animated Series and Harley Quinn.

His presence extends into gaming as well, most notably in Batman: Arkham City, where he delivers one of the franchise’s most memorable boss battles, along with appearances in DC Universe Online and the Lego Batman series. Across every medium, Clayface continues to redefine himself, much like the character itself, constantly shifting, evolving, and refusing to stay in one form, but a clay-textured mess of flesh. And to add to the chaos, DC’s horror-driven Clayface is once again rising to take centre stage with an upcoming DCU film starring Tom Rhys Harries, titled Clayface.

Clayface is returning for yet another horrific chapter

With the recent reveal of its first footage at CinemaCon, Warner Bros. has officially pulled the curtain back on its upcoming Clayface, centred around the iconic shape-shifting Batman villain. Directed by James Watkins and written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, the film leans heavily into horror, reimagining the story through the lens of rising actor Matt Hagen, portrayed by Tom Rhys Harries. With filming now officially wrapped, the project is set to hit theatres on October 23, 2026.

Alongside Harries, the film also stars Naomie Ackie, as the first teaser offers a chilling glimpse into its tone, flashing between a man with a brutally scarred face and his transformation into something far more unrecognisable. At its core, the story follows a struggling actor whose disfigurement leads him down a horrifying path, eventually turning into a shape-shifting clay entity.

And while the villain once again rises within the DC Universe, Clayface continues to stand as one of its most terrifying creations of the studio.
