Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Tom Holland’s fourth solo movie as Peter Parker, will release in theaters on July 31, with a new chapter for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man. After the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the movie follows Peter as he tries to get his life back on track in a world where no one remembers who he is. Brand New Day introduces a new supporting cast, new villains, and a more street-level, grounded story to set up the next era for Spider-Man. 

While the film raises the stakes with several intense confrontations, the early-bird preview screenings have fans are wondering which major character meets a tragic fate.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is not too b*****, with the only death confirmed to have been shown being Sara Gray, mutant Jean Gray's sister. But the rest of the main cast survives the events of the movie, which includes Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Jean, MJ, and Ned. Their survival leaves the door open for future MCU appearances, while Sara’s death is the film’s biggest emotional turning point. 

In Marvel Comics and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Sara Grey is the older sister of Jean Grey, though her character differs from hers. In the comics, she is a non-mutant who sticks by her sister and then becomes an advocate for mutant rights. But Sara is shown to have the same telekinetic and telepathic powers as Jean in Brand New Day. Her death at the hands of Damage Control is what emotionally propels Jean Grey’s journey and many of her actions throughout the story. 

But Sara Grey’s comic book story is a far cry from her fate in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. She was apparently k***** in X-Men #36 (1994), captured and devoured by the techno-organic alien race known as the Phalanx. For years, her death was thought to be permanent, and it was one of the most devastating losses the X-Men ever suffered. But in Phoenix #11 and Phoenix #12, Marvel rewrote her fate, revealing that cosmic events tied to the White Hot Room enabled Sara to return.

Sara's death is central to the story, but it is only one piece of Peter Parker's latest adventure.  

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the story of Peter Parker stepping into his own as a street-level hero. His life gets turned upside down when he meets Jean Grey, who is on a burning quest for revenge after suffering a devastating personal loss. Given the power she has through telepathy and telekinesis, her mission to find those responsible places Spider-Man into a dangerous situation that challenges his beliefs regarding justice, mercy, and responsibility.

In the movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day, there are fewer deaths but more emotional turmoil, and the greatest casualty of the movie is the death of Sara Grey. But with Jean Grey, MJ, Ned, and Peter Parker surviving, Sara’s fate becomes the catalyst for the story’s main conflict and Jean’s reasons. The ending preserves Spider-Man’s primary supporting cast while opening the door to new possibilities in future installments of the MCU and the next chapter of Peter Parker’s journey.
