Ryan Reynolds has a favorite Spider-Man. With the introduction of the multiverse in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), a treasure trove of possible crossovers lies within the realm of imagination. In the current MCU timeline, anything is possible, and characters from different universes can now have a quick team-up for a world-ending threat. And among the plethora of possibilities, there is one that excites almost everyone. A g**-slinging, foul-mouthed Deadpool meets the web-slinging, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, making for an internet-breaking crossover.    

But which of the three MCU Spider-Men would Deadpool prefer to share the screen with? Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds has an answer to the question.

In the 2024 Actors on Actors interview by Variety, Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield sat for a conversation together that led to a discussion on the epic crossover of the three Spider-Men of the MCU in the 2021 movie Spider-Man: No Way Home. Ryan Reynolds hailed the effort as groundbreaking and almost immediately crowned Andrew Garfield as an “amazing Spider-Man.”

“You were an amazing Spider-Man. And I mean that from the bottom of my heart. You were so fluid, and fun and kind of like, you kept that metronome of comedy mixed with pathos, that only a teenager would,” Reynolds said, praising Garfield’s Spider-Man.

It felt humbling for Garfield to be showered with praise from another MCU superhero, and he could only say thank you for his kind words in that moment. The actor admitted that it felt like “being re-welcomed into the party” after Amy Pascal, an executive producer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, reached out to him.   

In the sit-down with Garfield on Variety, Reynolds also praised the way the makers pulled off the crossover in the movie with a clever balance between pop culture references and the movie’s plot. He found it extremely moving and hilarious the way all of them performed it. The Deadpool actor even went ahead and said that he stole the movie and overshadowed the other two Spideys in the movie.

While on the subject of Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield opened up about his attachment to the character.

In the same Variety interview, Andrew Garfield talked about what Spider-Man means to him and how he felt when his journey as Spider-Man ended abruptly. He shared his childhood memory of dressing up in a Spider-Man costume that his mother made for him when he was three years old. 

“Oh my God, this person, this character, it means so f****** much to me,” Garfield expressed his feelings for the character.

This might be a reason why Garfield’s performance as Spider-Man was so impactful for Ryan Reynolds and why he ultimately chose him out of the three MCU Spider-Men. Anyhow, Reynolds is set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday for his next Deadpool appearance, while there is no confirmation if Garfield will once again don the Spidey suit.
