Martin Short, Eugene Levy, and a young crowd of future comedy legends reunite in You Had to Be There: How the Toronto Godspell Ignited the Comedy Revolution, Spread Love & Overalls, and Created a Community That Changed the World (in a Canadian Kind of Way). Director Nick Davis rebuilds the 1972 Toronto stage production using interviews, party recordings, and a secret audio tape of a live performance. Judd Apatow backed it.
While a secret audio tape kept the magic of that 1972 stage alive for decades, finding a seat for the film about it takes a little more detective work.
Where can you catch You Had to Be There right now
Right now, the only place to see You Had to Be There is a limited run in select US theaters. Greenwich Entertainment began the release on September 18, 2026, and the run is winding down in many cities. Trackers such as JustWatch and Reelgood list the film on no major platform, including Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, Max, or Apple TV. Viewers outside big cities may find the cinema calendar rather empty.

A digital release may not be far off, though nothing is official yet. An unconfirmed report points to November 20, 2026, and Greenwich Entertainment has not announced any date. When the film does land online, rental and purchase options should appear on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play, and YouTube Movies. Subscription services may follow later, depending on distribution deals, so the couch version of this reunion is still a few chapters away.
While this Godspell documentary waits for its digital debut, a film about one of its cast members has been streaming comfortably since spring.
Marty, Life Is Short is the Martin Short documentary on Netflix
Netflix released Marty, Life Is Short on May 12, 2026, giving Marty Short a full-length portrait of his own. Lawrence Kasdan, a four-time Oscar nominee behind The Big Chill, Wyatt Earp, and Body Heat, directed the film. Imagine Documentaries produced it, with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer serving as executive producers. The film blends never-before-seen archival footage with intimate interviews, which suits a comic who made controlled chaos look easy.

The story follows Short from Saturday Night Live to cult creations such as Jiminy Glick, before landing on his current renaissance. Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, John Mulaney, and Tom Hanks also appear. The film also covers heavy loss, from his brother and both parents to his wife, Nancy Dolman, in 2010, and daughter Katherine at 42. Until the Godspell film hits digital, Netflix remains the one place to stream a documentary about Short.
