Growing up in an oppressive regime where you are stripped of most of your basic rights and left to live a life dictated by someone else’s terms is not the ideal life experience. So, when someone recounts such an experience from their life, it is bound to be a dreary account of the truth from their world. But Marjane Satrapi made an unexpected choice to tell her life story under a repressive Iranian regime with dark, rebellious humor as the tone.
This got her graphic novel Persepolis, which later got adapted into an animated film by the same name, worldwide critical acclaim, and the film an Oscar nomination. As news of Satrapi’s death hits millions with a wave of sorrow, the demand for the celebrated film is rising once again.

Rather than on free subscription streaming platforms, Persepolis is mostly available for purchase or rental through large digital retailers in the United States. The movie can be bought digitally or rented for about $3.99 on platforms like Amazon Prime and Apple TV, per JustWatch. Furthermore, Persepolis is accessible on the Raro Video Amazon Channel, STUDIOCANAL PRESENTS Apple TV Channel, and 33 additional services in Italy and 21 other countries.
The animated film follows Marjane "Marji" Satrapi, who observes events in 1970s Iran through the eyes of a little girl and her idealistic family, witnessing the long-held desire of the despised Shah's defeat in the Iranian Revolution of 1979 come true. But as Marji becomes older, she sees firsthand how the new Iran, which is now governed by Islamic extremists, has turned into an oppressive dictatorship unto itself.
The film based on Satrapi's graphic novel came out in 2007 and showcased how women and girls were heavily restricted by the dated rules of Islamist fundamentalists in Iran. Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud directed the film, which earned a nomination for an Academy Award and took home the Jury Prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
The surging demand for the film is a direct result of her recent passing, which has shocked the world.
