Nearly 15 years after Gru first attempted to steal the Moon, Despicable Me remains one of animation’s most beloved franchises. With four mainline films, countless Minion misadventures, and a fifth installment already generating buzz, many fans are looking to revisit the series from the beginning. Fortunately, finding Gru, Lucy, and the Minions online is easier than ever.

In fact, Despicable Me made history as the first animated franchise to surpass the $5 billion mark globally, cementing its place as the highest-grossing animated film series of all time. Among its biggest earners are Despicable Me 3 ($1.03 billion), Despicable Me 4 ($968 million), and the original Despicable Me, which grossed more than $543 million worldwide.

However, the Despicable Me saga isn’t limited to its main installments, as the franchise has also spawned a series of wildly successful Minion-centered prequels.

As of June 2026, the Despicable Me franchise has grossed more than $5 billion worldwide across six films, making it the highest-grossing animated franchise in history. Much of that success has come from the Minions prequels, beginning with 2015’s Minions, which earned a staggering $1.15 billion globally, followed by Minions: The Rise of Gru in 2022, which added another $940 million. The franchise is set to expand further with Minions & Monsters, scheduled to hit theaters on July 1, 2026.

However, for Despicable Me 5, Universal and Illumination have yet to make anything official. However, director Chris Renaud has acknowledged that another installment remains a possibility, provided the team can come up with a fresh story worthy of the franchise. With Minions & Monsters currently taking priority, fans likely should not expect Gru’s next big-screen adventure before 2027 or 2028 at the earliest.
