From a franchise like Final Destination, rooted in your worst intrusive thoughts, to another built on a k***** doll coming to life in Child's Play, the horror-comedy genre has a smorgasbord of titles. While these movies have gone on to rake in a gazillion dollars at the box office, the foundation for the genre was laid by what are now considered classics, and one of them is the 1990 release Arachnophobia.

Named for an extreme and unreasonable fear of spiders, the movie has once again crawled back into the spotlight, leaving audiences wondering where they can watch it.

The movie, starring Jeff Daniels, Harley Jane Kozak, Julian Sands, and John Goodman, follows a rare spider species from the jungles of South America that, in a very comedic fashion, finds itself in California. Through the one hour forty-nine minutes runtime, the deadly spider mates and makes way for an offspring that proves to be lethal for several, leaving it to Dr. Ross Jennings and his unlikely allies to end the k******.

Much like Arachnophobia wears its fear right there in the title, another horror-comedy franchise has taken the joke even more literally by naming itself exactly what it is: Scary Movie.

Starring Anna Faris, the first Scary Movie was released in 2000, and what followed was a gazillion fans and equally brilliant movies. The franchise recently released Scary Movie 6 on June 12, bringing back a few of its stars and grossing $231.4 million. While the box office collection is one thing, the franchise also remains a streaming favorite.

The movies are available to stream on Prime Video and Paramount+ in the United States. Whether it is a spider crawling out of a coffin or a masked k***** parodying itself into oblivion, the horror-comedy genre keeps proving there's an audience for scares served with a side of laughs. From Arachnophobia's decades-old cult status to Scary Movie's genre-defining self-awareness, these franchises show no signs of slowing down, and with both readily available to stream, there is no better time to revisit (or discover) why audiences keep coming back for more.
