The most elaborate and grand experience for Avatar: Fire and Ash is expected to be the theaters as its global premiere arrives on December 19, 2025. Devoted audience of the franchise can rush to their nearest IMAX to celebrate the film as the 20th Century Studios and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures are distributing it on IMAX, Dolby Vision, and 3-D like premium formats for an ultimate immersive feel. Though the streaming date for the highly anticipated film has not been announced yet, home viewing is certainly possible.
This franchise usually goes to theatres first before the streaming and VOD rollout. Avatar: Fire and Ash, which has brought together the franchise’s old favorites like Sam Worthington (Jake Sully), Zoe Saldaña (Neytiri), Sigourney Weaver (Kiri), and new faces, including Oona Chaplin as Varang, is likely to be streaming on Disney+ and Hulu soon after its theatre run ends. For early access, theater tickets can be purchased from Monday onwards, as the story of Pandora with new tribes, new conflicts, and new scale aims to redefine sequels.
With winter slowly approaching, now is the perfect time to devote a weekend to streaming and brushing up on the Avatar lore before Fire and Ash takes over the festive season.
Things to know before watching Avatar: Fire and Ash
The very first Avatar debuted the entire franchise back in 2009, and then followed Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022, which smashed box-office records all over the globe. Fire and Ash is the one holding these high expectations to the highest realm now, with the use of a new technology, a deeper narrative, and the highest stakes ever. While watching the entire franchise is not important to enjoy the new film, it is definitely recommended.

In an interview with IGN, James Cameron mentioned that Fire and Ash will obliterate the Sullys’ family bonds, so keep the tissues ready. Meanwhile, Kiri’s origin story will be a highlight in the film. Cameron told the outlet, “I think it's important to think of (The Way of Water) and (Fire and Ash) as a complete story that fully resolves," hinting that Avatar 4 and 5 are not guaranteed. The film has already traveled through wars of water and now wars of fire, to not just entertain but to gradually provoke thoughts on humanity.
