"When Are We Gonna Work Together?"- Cate Blanchett Pitches a Collaboration With Kōji Yakusho

Kōji Yakusho can make cleaning Tokyo toilets look like an existential masterclass. In Wim Wenders' Perfect Days, his quiet portrayal of Hirayama turned ordinary routines into something spellbinding, earning him the Best Actor prize at Cannes in 2023. No flying capes, no universe-threatening lasers, just a man, his cassette tapes, and cinema working its magic.
Three years later, the Japanese star is still attracting Hollywood attention. At the Tokyo International Film Festival, Oscar winner Cate Blanchett found herself sharing a stage with Yakusho.
The conversation concerned displaced filmmakers, but Blanchett suddenly had a creative proposition of her own.
Cate Blanchett surprises Kōji Yakusho with an unexpected collaboration pitch
When Cate Blanchett gets the microphone, apparently Hollywood's casting department should keep a notepad handy. At an October 30 Tokyo International Film Festival event, Kōji Yakusho appeared as a surprise guest following screenings backed by the Displacement Film Fund. Asked to respond to the Japanese actor's remarks, Blanchett had one question.
"When are we gonna work together?" she asked. She immediately acknowledged the detour.

"That's my question, it has nothing to do with the Displacement Film Fund." she qupped.
Consider it an Oscar-winning performer conducting the world's most elegant impromptu audition request. Yakusho had been discussing the five short films showcased at the festival. He praised Mohammad Rasoulof's Sense of Water for its quiet treatment of loneliness and hardship, while Shahrbanoo Sadat's Super Afghan Gym left him smiling.
The event carried purpose beneath that exchange. Blanchett co-founded the fund to support filmmakers displaced from their homes and storytellers examining experiences of exile. Uniqlo is a founding partner, and Yakusho has collaborated with its Peace for All charity initiative.
And Blanchett's real calendar already contains an alien invasion that makes conventional casting look positively ordinary.
Cate Blanchett transforms into an alien biker for Alpha Gang alongside Chris Pine
In Alpha Gang, Cate Blanchett swaps elegant red-carpet glamour for an eyepatch, dark hair, and leather-clad extraterrestrial swagger. A first-look image released in September showed the actress transformed into a formidable biker, apparently ready to conquer Earth or demand a parking permit.

Directors David and Nathan Zellner, previously responsible for Sasquatch Sunset, have built an absurd science-fiction comedy about aliens masquerading as a 1950s motorcycle gang in Eastern Europe. Their invasion meets an unexpectedly dangerous obstacle: human emotion. Apparently, interplanetary conquest becomes tricky when the invaders develop feelings.
The ensemble includes Chris Pine, Léa Seydoux, Dave Bautista, Lily-Rose Depp, Riley Keough, Doona Bae, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. Blanchett also produces the film through Dirty Films. Alpha Gang screened at Telluride and Toronto in September, then received its Japanese premiere in Tokyo on October 30, with Blanchett attending alongside the Zellner brothers. A wider theatrical release date has not been confirmed.
