What comes next for John Cena is a calendar packed tighter than a wrestling card on pay-per-view night. The retired WWE star has swapped the ring for film sets, and the lineup now includes an action comedy, a crypto caper, a comic book adaptation, and a Robert Ludlum thriller. Some titles are finished, some are about to start filming, and a few have been waiting patiently for years.

While one of those films reaches viewers today, the rest of the slate lines up behind it like challengers at ringside.

Matchbox: The Movie

Matchbox: The Movie premiered on October 5, 2026, in a limited run at AMC Lincoln Square, and it lands on Apple TV today. John Cena plays Sean Walker, an undercover CIA agent who returns to his hometown and reunites with childhood friends. Those friends are quickly dragged into a chase across the globe for a stolen nuclear weapon that the CIA believes they took themselves. The mission is to steal the b*** back, clear their names, and save the world.

Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Arturo Castro, and Teyonah Parris play the friend group, with Danai Gurira, Corey Stoll, and Bill Camp in supporting roles. Sam Hargrave, known for Extraction, directed from a script by David Coggeshall, and the crew filmed in Budapest, Casablanca, Erfoud, and Merzouga. The film runs about two hours and six minutes with a PG-13 rating. Early reviews lean mixed to negative, so the toy cars may need better traction.

As Matchbox: The Movie settles into living rooms, a vanished family is about to cause trouble in Atlanta.

The Family Disappears

The Family Disappears was announced on October 7, with filming set to begin November 10 in Atlanta. An overworked dad returns from a work trip to find his family gone and a mysterious newcomer living in his house, which is a rather rude welcome home. David Harbour co-leads alongside John Cena, whose exact role remains under wraps. Jonatan Etzler directs Brendan O’Hare’s screenplay, and the producers behind Friendship are on board, so dark comedy is familiar territory.

As Atlanta prepares for a missing family, Netflix already has a missing password story in the can.

One Attempt Remaining

One Attempt Remaining began principal photography in March 2026 and is now finished or in post-production. John Cena stars opposite Jennifer Garner, who also produces, as an ex-couple who learn that their crypto winnings are worth millions. The catch is that nobody remembers the password, and the account is about to expire. Their only option is to retrace one wild night, which may also remind them why they fell in love.

Jennifer Garner and John Cena Get to Work on Upcoming Netflix Project

Kay Cannon directs from a script she co-wrote with Joe Boothe and Alexa Alemanni, and the cast includes Kate McKinnon, Yara Shahidi, and Larry Wilmore. Filming took place in Los Angeles and Long Beach. Netflix has not announced a release date, though late 2026 or later is expected.

While the exes hunt for a password, another Netflix project features a hero who is not quite what he appears to be.

The Leading Man

The Leading Man adapts the Oni Press comic by Jeremy Haun and B. Clay Moore, with John Cena as a self-absorbed Hollywood action star. His co-star, played by Kevin Hart, turns out to be a real undercover agent, which forces the pampered actor to save the world without a stunt double. Jon and Erich Hoeber wrote the script, and Cena and Hart both produce. The project was announced in August 2025, and no director or release date has been set.

As that film waits for a director, a crew of real stunt performers has already finished filming.

Stuntnuts: The Movie

Stuntnuts: The Movie is a meta action comedy tied to the Kick-A** universe of Matthew Vaughn, and it is now in post-production. A group of stunt performers tries to keep their training gym open by hiring themselves out, while Chris Hemsworth and Sam Rockwell appear as themselves. John Cena is announced for the series, though some reports link him more closely to a later installment as a character named Chestnut. Damien Walters directed, and no release date exists.

HBO Max's Peacemaker Season 2 premiere, New York, USA, attended by John Cena

While Stuntnuts: The Movie waits for a date, one project has waited far longer.

The Janson Directive

The Janson Directive adapts the 2002 novel by Robert Ludlum, with John Cena as Paul Janson, a former Navy SEAL and POW turned corporate security consultant. A rescue mission for a Nobel Peace Laureate goes disastrously wrong, and Janson is framed, with a termination order issued from the highest levels of the U.S. government. Few performance reviews go worse. Akiva Goldsman and James Vanderbilt wrote the script for Universal, and Dwayne Johnson, once eyed for the lead, remains a producer.
