The Kang Dynasty was ultimately scrapped and re-conceived as Avengers: Doomsday, scrapping the franchise’s primary antagonist entirely.

When Armor Wars was first announced during Disney’s 2020 Investor Day, it was pitched as a classic 6-episode Disney+ series starring Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes (War Machine). The plot was designed to explore Tony Stark’s worst nightmare: what happens when his advanced Stark Industries technology falls into the wrong hands.

In late 2022, Marvel made a surprising pivot, announcing that Armor Wars was being redeveloped from a streaming series into a feature film. Chloe Zhao’s 2021 film Eternals remains one of the MCU’s most divisive entries, polarizing fans with its sweeping cosmic scale, philosophical undertones, and slow pacing. Despite its mixed critical reception, the film ended on a massive cliffhanger with Arishem the Judge abducting Sersi, Kingo, and Phastos to judge humanity's worth.

While a sequel was initially part of Marvel’s internal roadmap, studio fatigue, changing box office realities, and a shift toward focusing on proven franchise anchors led Disney to quietly shelve Eternals 2. The loose threads left by the first film remain unresolved, effectively making the Eternals a narrative dead end in the current MCU timeline.

Following the monumental success of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Danai Gurira’s breakout character Okoye was set to anchor her own dedicated Disney+ series. First reported in 2021 and heavily teased by producers, the project was expected to explore the origins and missions of the Dora Milaje's elite tactical wing, the Midnight Angels. Unfortunately, as Disney underwent a massive corporate restructuring and re-evaluated its streaming output to focus on quality over quantity, the Okoye spin-off was shelved before principal photography ever began.

Long before the multiverse and streaming services dominated the MCU, the fate of a fourth Iron Man film was a frequent topic of speculation following the massive billion-dollar success of Iron Man 3 in 2013. However, Robert Downey Jr. and Marvel Studios mutually agreed that Tony Stark’s arc was best concluded within the grander ensemble framework of the Avengers films and Captain America: Civil War.

While fans spent years hoping for a standalone return, Downey’s definitive farewell in Avengers: Endgame and his much-anticipated return as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday have cemented the reality that Iron Man 4 was never meant to be.

In 2015, ABC ordered a pilot for a half-hour comedy series centered on the blue-collar workers tasked with cleaning up after superhero battles. Helmed by sitcom veteran Ben Karlin, the show was meant to mirror the tone of workplace comedies like The Office. However, the project quietly vanished from the network’s schedule due to scheduling conflicts and shifting television priorities at Marvel Television.

Following Louis Leterrier’s 2008 film The Incredible Hulk starring Edward Norton, Marvel had aggressive plans for a direct sequel. The film was intended to introduce classic gamma-irradiated characters like the Leader (Samuel Sterns) and Red Hulk. However, creative differences between Norton and Marvel Studios, combined with complicated distribution rights held by Universal Pictures, ultimately derailed the project.

The graveyard of cancelled Marvel projects highlights the unpredictable, high-stakes nature of modern franchise filmmaking. While some properties are casualties of changing corporate strategies, others fall victim to real-world casting shifts or evolving box office trends. Ultimately, for every blockbuster that makes it to the screen, there is a fascinating alternate-universe MCU that we will never get to see.
