Stephen King recently shared a rare endorsement for an upcoming horror film, stating there is a movie coming on Shudder in October called The Cycle that he does not usually pump up unless it is his own work, but this one is special and deserves a spot on everyone's calendar.

The legendary author's recommendation carries significant weight given his decades as horror's most trusted voice. This Shudder Original Film arrives just in time for spooky season, directed by Jordan Downey and featuring a compelling mystery centered on family secrets and buried trauma.

The Cycle is directed by Jordan Downey, known for his work on The Head Hunter and V/H/S/Beyond, and stars Deborah Ann Woll in the lead role. Woll brings genre credibility from her work in the Escape Room franchise alongside her broader career highlights, including playing Karen Page across Marvel's Daredevil series and Jessica Hamby in HBO's True Blood.

Jeffrey Donovan, best known for Burn Notice, also stars in the film, rounding out a cast that further includes Gretchen Corbett, Jack Doolan, and Will Hochman. The film centers on a chilling premise following the discovery of a man's body after he had been missing for thirty-six years, found at the scene of a horrific crime that forces his estranged daughter to unravel his dark, buried past.

Woll plays forensic anthropologist Meg, who discovers that the recently found body of a 36-year-old missing person's case is her estranged father, leading her to investigate a disturbing secret her father thought he took to the grave. The narrative unfolds as a procedural horror thriller blending elements of The X-Files and True Detective as Meg delves deeper into her father's mysterious disappearance and the gruesome crime scene where his body was discovered.

With the cast and premise established, here is everything else you need to know about this Stephen King-endorsed horror film.

The Cycle will premiere exclusively on Shudder on Friday, October 23, 2026, as part of the streaming service's Halloween lineup. The film runs 111 minutes and will be available as a Shudder Original Film, meaning it will not receive a theatrical release before hitting the platform.

Shudder has included The Cycle in its "Season of Screams" programming event, which returns September 1 featuring a supersized lineup of new film releases, series, specials, screening events and live watch parties. The movie will have its world premiere at Fantastic Fest 2026 in Austin, where it was presented as one of the festival's major  premieres alongside titles like Resident Evil and Carrie.

Director Jordan Downey also directed and wrote Stork, one of the installments in the anthology horror film V/H/S/Beyond, which debuted on Shudder in October of 2024. The film comes from the producer of this year's biggest horror hit, Obsession, adding to the anticipation surrounding this Stephen King-recommended thriller.
